"Through the rain" was the first single from the album "Charmbracelet".
In an unprecedented online music promotion, MTV Networks'
online properties, TMF (The Music Factory) web sites and
BET Network's online property debuted the song on 25 Web sites
on September 26, 2002. The 24-hour exclusive audio stream of the
single marked the first time that MTV Networks has utilized its awardwinning
brands to promote an artist's single online across the globe.
"Through the rain" is not just another ballad. It's a lyrical masterpiece
delivered to perfection. The excessive vocal aerobics that seem
to plague many singers are kept in check, and what you hear is a
vocal performance that exudes pure emotion and passion. You can't
help but believe that this is one of Mariah's most personal songs to
date. It's her light at the end of the tunnel.
The shooting of the video, which took place in New York City,
lasted two days and was directed by director Dave Meyers. The story
is pretty much based on the life of the Mariah's parents: a mixed
couple that in the sixties is forced to separate and tries to get back
together. Jamie-Lynn Sigler (Meadow on The Soprano's) stars as
Mariah's mother.
In most countries "Through the rain" was released in November
2002, but MonarC Music and Island Def Jam, Mariah's record label,
initially had no plans to release "Through the rain" as a commercial
single in the USA. However, following Mariah's stellar performance
of the song at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles on January
13, 2003, the label reversed its decision and released the single
on February 4. It became the best-selling single for two consecutive
weeks, selling 105,549 copies, but only reached number 81 on
Billboard's Hot 100.
