When is it too early to start playing Christmas music? The age-old debate has stirred discussion among music fans, people with holiday cheer and Scrooges alike. Unsurprisingly, Mariah Carey's 1994 classic "All I Want for Christmas Is You", often gets more listens closer to the Christmas season, but this year she responded to fans who are already breaking out the beloved tune, suggesting it's too early for the holiday hit.
In a tweet on Thursday morning, Carey responded to a fan who posted a screenshot of Google Trends, showing searches for "Mariah Carey All I Want for Christmas". The chart shows upticks in searches beginning in late October and November and peaking in December. The Twitter user focused on a small, recent upward curve and noted, "It's happening."
Carey quote-tweeted the fan and simply wrote, "Not yet." It's not clear if she means that she feels it's too early to listen to the song (Halloween hasn't even passed yet, after all) or if she thinks that it's just a false start and people will really start listening in a few weeks. In a 2019 video she tweeted out, Carey seemed to indicate that she doesn't feel it's appropriate to listen to Christmas music until the clock strikes midnight on November 1.
Despite Carey saying it wasn't time yet, fans have shared memes and responses, telling her that they're already ready to put her 1994 holiday album Merry Christmas on repeat.
It's also worth mentioning that Wednesday was the 26th anniversary of the song's release. While the tune is approaching 30 years old, fans have long celebrated it, and in 2019, Carey's Christmas song broke records by landing at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. According to The New York Times, this made "All I Want For Christmas Is You" both the first Christmas song to hit number one since Alvin and the Chipmunks in 1960, and the song that took the longest to reach number one.
During a recent appearance on Billboard's "Quizzed" series, Carey appeared with writer and comedic actress Tina Fey to talk about Mean Girls. One of the quiz questions Fey asked was, what song do The Plastics dance to at the talent show in the film. Carey correctly responded "Jingle Bell Rock", but said, "I'm a little bit disappointed that they're not dancing to my song, but 'Jingle Bell Rock' is a bit older than 'All I Want for Christmas Is You', so that's okay," she told Fey.
Fey said that she could license the song for a sequel and offered her a part in a possible Mean Girls follow up. "I definitely want to be in it as well," Carey said. "Maybe I could be friends with the cool mom, with Amy Poehler, as her other friend who wears sweatsuits."
Carey's publicist did not respond to Newsweek's emailed request for comment in time for publication.
