Forbes richest women, no Mariah (102,844)

Absolutely. "Until Beyoncé, Taylor, Rihanna and even Madonna can match these 'tip of the iceberg' statistics I just mentioned, they are not anywhere near Mariah Carey in popularity." I witnessed Mariah mania. I witnessed the 90ies, Beyoncé, Taylor and Rihanna come not even close to this and never will. They are popular entertainers, nothing more. Mariah had a superstardom and still has only a few in this world share/shared. A Forbes list says nothing about the impact and fame an artist has. If Justin Bieber would be number one on the money list, it would not change the genius musicality and worldwide fame of Prince and Michael for example. Just watch Mariah singing "My All" at the Pavarotti and Friends concert, the look of the audience says it all. They know they witnessed a superstar that only comes once in a billion years. Taylor and Rihanna are okay but not special at all. But there will never be another Mariah.

You just speak with opinions and try to pass them off as facts. First things first, the era Mariah reigned supreme - the 90's - cannot be compared with this day we live in with the internet, streaming, YouTube and social media. Mariah had none of these and still had her foot on every other single artists necks, Both male and female. Her numbers speak volumes - this is someone as young as she was, went toe to toe with Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Céline Dion, Toni Braxton, Michael Bolton, Sheryl Crowe, Alanis Morrisette, The Spice Girls, Mary J. Blige, Tevin Campbell, Aaliyah, Brandy, Prince, Monica, Madonna Boyz II Men etc all of whom it should be noted were also in their prime, And still came out on top winning multiple awards (Billboard artist of the decade and millennium artist to name a few) that reflect her impact and popularity. Mariah made over 1 billion US dollars for Sony - one artist alone, Until Beyoncé, Taylor, Rihanna and even Madonna can match these "tip of the iceberg" statistics I just mentioned, they are not anywhere near Mariah Carey in popularity. Social media is all smoke and mirrors and that "fame" is false and does not translate to anything tangible when it comes down to the real. You of all people should know this with numbers being fabricated today with follower count and all.

Charmbracelet tour (102,786)
by MusicfanJ from Germany

I can't believe it's 20 years since this wonderful tour started. I remember it as it was yesterday and I will never forget that concert. It was my first to see Mariah live. I was totally blown away just like my best friend who went with me. I re-wachted the tour on YouTube yesterday and I also wish there was an official DVD. (Instead of the Mimi tour.) The way Mariah did the concerts, her voice better than on the album. I loved everything. Her intro, her confidence, her look. Oh my, I will never forget her beauty on that night. Singing on the piano "Subtle Invitation", then "Bringin' on the Heartbreak", the atmosphere was so unique. It sounds corny but the whole audience was simply enchanted. Never experienced something like it again. Of course Trey and the band with the background singers were fantastic too. It was like a dream, too good to be true but it was. I also liked the idea with the painting for every Mariah song. "Vision of love", "Without you" and "Hero" live were just phenomenal. I could go on and on with the praising. One of the best nights in my life. The memory is deep in my heart. I Mariah.

Best song intro (102,781)
by MusicfanJ from Germany
| |

"Fantasy" and "Vision of Love" are outstanding. 100% Mariah magic, just brilliant. Yes, her years from 1990 until 1999 are unbelievable. I did a "music marathon" with the songs from that decade. The melodies, her lyrics, her voice so soft and powerful. I can't get enough of it. It's addictive for the ears and soul. Oh Tina Arena really? She's great. That would be a nice surprise. I have a best of CD from her, I just listenend the week before. Fanstasic voice and the song "Chains" reminded me a little bit of Mariah on some parts.

Best song intro (102,780)

You're so right, Matty. The Bachelorette commercial is what prompted my post. I was moving around cleaning in my living room and I heard the Fantasy intro and MC's iconic voice. I think that Fantasy has been used more in past 5 years in commercials and movies than any other MC song. 1990-1999 will always be the years that non fans will know Mariah Carey for her work and artistry. Cheers to the queen of iconic songs and intros and that voice back then. I hope that we get biopic movie in the next five years played by the Australian singer and actress Tina Arena.

I just discovered this. Vanishing is one of my favourites from Mariah and I really love this little rendition of it. I love the Butterfly tour, also her voice had a change, but still overwhelming. Her energy on stage, her look, her charisma. She seemed so happy. Just wow. I wish the tour had be released on DVD. The band was fantastic too, I like the guitar player on My All. And the intro of the concert, so beautiful.

Yes she was. I grew up with her music. Germany loves Tina. The whole world. What a powerful lady. Real music, a real superstar with such a positive, friendly aura. Almost all the good ones are gone. It makes me thoughtful indeed. Time goes too fast. Tina Turner's music will stay forever.

"More concerned about the way she looks than anything else." Yes, absolutely. It's not necessary. I became a fan because of her music not because of the glamour. She's a beautiful woman, so no need for all this stuff. But yes, it's her choice. I just wish there would be less talking about glamour, I would love to hear more about the music.

I honestly think at this point she's more concerned about the way she looks than anything else, even her vocals. A few years back during the #1 to Infinity era they did a video of her "reacting" to each of her number ones. Instead of sharing interesting anecdotes/reflections about the songs/videos, she spent the whole time criticizing her outfits and hairstyles, saying things like "hideous, what where they thinking with this shot, dahhhling".
There are multiple examples of performances from the last decade where she gets to a difficult part of the song, and then stops singing to look at herself in the monitor and rant about her hair/makeup or how she needs a "glam moment". This hyper fixation on appearance (which no one cares about other than her) seems to be a crutch to avoid dealing with the reality of the state of her vocals (a convenient way to distract the audience from the fact that she's not delivering, maybe she's even starting to fool herself).
As far as Lovers and Friends, she looked amazing, better than she has in years imo. But aside from a few nice impromptu vocal moments, she also delivered one of her worst vocal performances ever. It seems that she's happy with that trade off.

Maybe that is one of reasons she and Tanaka broke up. He probably wanted her to get some professional or medical help for her vocal issues. You know MC doesn't like to be told what she should do. I posted prematurely before I saw the rest of the videos. Can we all come to terms that we may never get a new Mariah Carey album? How can she produce an album with the state that her voice is in? It is sad that MC's career is on the verge of being over.

What is your initial fan story? (102,646)
by MusicfanJ from Germany
| |
|

I really enjoyed to read all the different stories. Here's mine:
As a kid I always loved "Without you", it was played every evening on the radio and of course on MTV. Then two or three years later I had my own little radio which was playing all the time. And then the magic happend. I heard "Fantasy" and I became addicted to this song. When Daydream was released I bought it as my first real album (eurodance mix tape doesn't count lol) as a cassette. I still have it, but lost the case. Anyway my love for Mariah increased from that day on. Daydream was "my" album and my treasure. "Open Arms", "One sweet day" and "Always be my baby", huge hits and Mariah Mania was going on. I was so proud of my good taste. And I loved the "Fantasy" video so much, Mariah was the sweetest and coolest girl for me with the best voice I've ever heard. Everything was outstanding, her look, her voice, her charisma. I bought "Music Box", "Emotions" and her debut on CD and I could not believe how good all the albums were. I knew from that day, that I will always love her music. Taste changes, of course mine did as well, but the love for Mariah's music stayed.
Funny side note: my mom had bought the debut in 90 because she loved "Vision of love".

It was multiple occurrences for me. And random pop ups of her music anytime I was on MTV, or on the radio trying to capture my favorite music videos and songs on VHS and cassette respectively. (Good old 90's.) Then I started to take note that she was the singer of so many songs I knew, loved, but didn't know who sang them - "Love Takes Time", "Vision of Love" (finally watched the video while going "oh, it has a video"?), "Anytime you need a friend" and "Hero". I was a die hard Céline fan and so when buying a new Céline CD, I also bought Mariah's new CD - "Butterfly".

AI Mariah Carey songs (102,635)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
I asked AI to write song as Mariah Carey would write it, and here's what it came up with.
Verse 1: I never thought that love could be so real, But then you walked into my life, and now I feel, A passion deep inside my soul, A flame that burns beyond control.
Chorus: Cause you're the one that I need, You're the air that I breathe, And I can't imagine living without you, Cause you're my forever love, And I thank the stars above, For bringing me to you, my love.
Verse 2: With every breath I take, I feel your love, It's like a melody, that's sung from up above, And every time I look into your eyes, I'm lost in a world, where love never dies.
Chorus: Cause you're the one that I need, You're the air that I breathe, And I can't imagine living without you, Cause you're my forever love, And I thank the stars above, For bringing me to you, my love.
Bridge: And in this world, that's so full of pain, You are the sunshine, that breaks through the rain, And I'll never let you go, my heart's in your hands, Cause baby, you're the one that I need, the only one that understands.
Chorus: Cause you're the one that I need, You're the air that I breathe, And I can't imagine living without you, Cause you're my forever love, And I thank the stars above, For bringing me to you, my love.
Outro: Cause baby, you're my forever love, And I'll thank the stars above, For giving me you, my love.

Legacy (102,612)
by MusicfanJ from Germany
| |
|
|
For me her signature song is "Vision of love" too. Then, "Without You" and "Fantasy". Defenitely not "All I want for Christmas is you". Non fans think of Mariah as the one with the voice for the ballads. The younger ones maybe think of Christmas. But not the majority. Her 90ies songs are unreachable and unforgettable. So I'm not worried about her legacy. She already was a legend at the age of 25, maybe a curse and a blessing at the same time. Because you can't top it. I will never forget when Mariah mania was going on around the world in 95/96. And then we got "Butterfly". It was such a surprise and also unforgettable. She made music history and the catchy Christmas tune is just a bonus.

Legacy (102,610)

I totally agree, Randy. AIWFCIY is one of the least impressive popular songs in her catalogue. I also think that "Hero" is pretty overrated, and the fact that she wrote it for someone else indicates to me that it shouldn't be considered her signature song. To me, "Vision of Love" is her signature song. It is one of the most triumphant, mature, transcendent, and confident songs in her catalogue. I think it needs to elevated above "AIWFCIY" and "Hero" - neither of those songs truly represent her artistry.
"Butterfly" is considered by most OG fans to be her best album, but, to me, "Emotions" is either a very close second or tied for first place. That era was Mariah at her most authentic. She was in full control of the creative direction of that album. Her presentation was reserved but confident, and her image was very simple. I would've pushed her tour during the "Emotions" era to silence the naysayers - "Unplugged" was great but not enough. She was not yet in the unhealthy marriage to Tommy (that relationship should have remained professional). And she was not pandering to any particular audience in the way she did post-1997.

Emotions album is one of my favourites, it oozes soul, her voice is so warm and the ballads are perfect. Till the End of Time is a masterpiece, it's beautiful. Her image was so refined during this album wholesome, relatable and appealing.

"Make music that mirror their life", yes absolutely. That's what I'm missing too. It's good to get older and wiser and the music should show it. Not trying to be 20. Mariah's 90ies albums had the best melodies and I love the lyrics. Funny the sound was more for grown-ups than on the last two albums. I would still love a Jazz album by Mariah. Or back to her "roots" classic Mariah Carey with a real band/musicians.

I know that show business is harder for women, but the reason I like Sting and many other male singers is the fact that they have not tried to compete with the younger generations. I love Mariah, I love Madonna and many more, but why don't they make music that mirror their life, and their age. I'm getting older too, and younger artists like Adele feels more my age. I love Mariah, specially 1990 to 1997. Drop the lazy RnB. Make melodies.

Well, I think there's nothing harder for women than showbusiness. And I wonder if it will ever change? Look at the Stones, Elton John, Sting, Bryan Adams. Nobody cares how old they are, for women it should be the same. But it's not. Tina Turner, Gladys Knight and Cher are really the coolest who showed how wrong the media and record companies are. But they are sadly rare indeed. Music should never be about age or anything. It's so dumb. A voice, talent is the only thing that is needed. Something that is totally missed by most of today's "artists".

Absolutely. It's an outstanding album, it belongs to her best. I love the mix of soul, pop, gospel, and house. The lyrics are one of my favourites. It's crazy that she wrote "better" grown-up lyrics with 21/22 than in her 30ies/40ies. The songs are so poetical. The voice, oh my. Still so fresh and powerful. The ballads are the best. "Make it Happen" what a hymn. "The Wind" epic that jazz instrumental and Mariah's soft and powerful voice. It's unbelievable the way she could sing at such a young age. Classy all the way. Plus her look, and the art of the album. Everytime I listen to it, it's like medicine for the ears and soul. This album needs all the appreciation.

I find myself looking back on this album/era regretting that it hasn't been properly appreciated by fans and critics alike. I consider it Mariah's most "adult" album and my second favorite behind "Butterfly". Songs like "Can't Let Go", "If It's Over", Make It Happen", "So Blessed" and others sound and feel like they were recorded/written by someone much older than early 20s. Having C+C Music Factory alongside Walter Afanasieff really helped her strike a "just right" balance of soul, pop, gospel, and house.
It was also unique in the sense that she was not yet married to Tommy but had full control over the creative direction of the album. It makes me wonder what her trajectory would have been if she hadn't decided to marry Tommy. Don't get me wrong, I love "Music Box" and "Daydream", but "Emotions" really tops both of those records in terms of writing, vocals, and production. She seemed much happier in the "Emotions" period and not very happy during the 1993-1996 period. It's such a unique moment in her catalog and career.

I think she always goes on vacation before promotion. In addition, it's been awhile since Caution. Furthermore, it's been quiet lately. We all know MC can make an album in three months. And for the record I like Rainbow. Her voice is not in great shape but she is the queen of studio magic. Even if MC is not signed, she can easily announce a signing and an album at the same time. Just a thought (102,518)

It makes sense. Heartbreaks, traumas and dissapointments can destroy a voice, if the soul has pain, the voice gets weaker and weaker. For everyone, not just singers. I never heard about that Japanese healer, but it sounds interesting. Definitely something one could try.

Just a thought (102,516)

Singer Melanie Fiona lost her voice some years ago. She could not sing for longer than 30 minutes without going hoarse. One particular doctor asked her if her life had been hard for the past couple of years with some heartbreak or disappointment. She told the doctor yes and he referred her to a Japanese reiki healer. Once she had three sessions with the healer, she was able to let go of all of the trauma that caused her voice problems. Maybe this is what has happened to MC's voice. She has experienced a lot of heartbreak and disappointment during her career especially during the years of 1998-2001, 2003-2005, 2008-2010, 2013-2015, and 2018-2022.

Music Box (102,507)

What a beautiful and great post. "Every night I had my headphones on and fell asleep listening to that song." I did the same with Everything Fades Away, I thought I were the only one back then.
I became a fan with "Daydream", "Music Box" was my second album I bought and I loved it right away, still do. I get nostalgic while listening, because of all the reasons you mentioned. It is such a special album, it has a quality from the first seconds to the last. It's just overwhelming. When I listen to it now, it's like back then. There's the same feelings, it goes very deep. It's hard to describe in English, but I hope you understand. I knew a German Hip-Hop producer, he loved Everything Fades Away more than anything else. Every time we listened to it, he said only Mariah with a big smile. I think that says a lot. Yes, only Mariah could do an album like Music Box at a time where all things came together perfectly. It was and is a perfect album. Not just for lambs.

Music Box (102,505)

Everything Fades Away was the last track on the European version of Music Box, and is my favourite track from the album. I first became a fan after My All and my first CD by Mariah was Butterfly. But after that I bought Daydream and a friend of me gave me her Music Box CD, for a long time Everything Fades Away was my favourite song to listen to, every night I had my headphones on and fell asleep listening to that song.
What I think makes Music Box such a good album, is that it's the sound many people call the classic Mariah. When I listen to songs from Music Box, it makes me nostalgic, even though I didn't listen to it when it first came out. There are a few songs that bring me back to certain moments in life, and certain eras of time. The sound of Music Box makes you nostalgic about Mariah, her image and voice, but also to the 90s and maybe a time that now seems innocent and maybe less troublesome as compared to today's world.
Music Box is also what made Mariah an international act, brought her to super stardom, and the songs from that album is what non fan people remember the most.
Yes, it would have been really nice to get a Music Box'esque album, but to capture the era, moment and the phenomenon that was Music Box, will be hard to do.
Now I think I have to listen to Everything Fades Away.

Yes, yes and yes. I won't give up that dream. It's like you said, no five octaves are needed for Mariah magic. Just melodies, lyrics, heart and soul.

Oh, how I want an album like that again. An album with melodies. Lyrics without mentioning spandex, helicopters, and stuff like that. An album with her singing. She can still make that. She doesn't need to sing with 5 octaves. No autotune. Give is the voice she still has instead of that sound.
