"Emotions" album appreciation (102,565)
by MusicfanJ from Germany
| |
|
|
Absolutely. It's an outstanding album, it belongs to her best. I love the mix of soul, pop, gospel, and house. The lyrics are one of my favourites. It's crazy that she wrote "better" grown-up lyrics with 21/22 than in her 30ies/40ies. The songs are so poetical. The voice, oh my. Still so fresh and powerful. The ballads are the best. "Make it Happen" what a hymn. "The Wind" epic that jazz instrumental and Mariah's soft and powerful voice. It's unbelievable the way she could sing at such a young age. Classy all the way. Plus her look, and the art of the album. Everytime I listen to it, it's like medicine for the ears and soul. This album needs all the appreciation.

"Emotions" album appreciation (102,562)
by BFF from United States
| |

I find myself looking back on this album/era regretting that it hasn't been properly appreciated by fans and critics alike. I consider it Mariah's most "adult" album and my second favorite behind "Butterfly". Songs like "Can't Let Go", "If It's Over", Make It Happen", "So Blessed" and others sound and feel like they were recorded/written by someone much older than early 20s. Having C+C Music Factory alongside Walter Afanasieff really helped her strike a "just right" balance of soul, pop, gospel, and house.
It was also unique in the sense that she was not yet married to Tommy but had full control over the creative direction of the album. It makes me wonder what her trajectory would have been if she hadn't decided to marry Tommy. Don't get me wrong, I love "Music Box" and "Daydream", but "Emotions" really tops both of those records in terms of writing, vocals, and production. She seemed much happier in the "Emotions" period and not very happy during the 1993-1996 period. It's such a unique moment in her catalog and career.

New album titles, what's your fave? (102,533)

Yes, earth diva is not enough for MC, it must be galactic. Lol. Galactic vibes (space funk) with space-themed lyrics, that would be something new. I should listen to "Meteorite" right now. Such a groovy song.

I asked ChatGPT to come up with some potential album titles for Mariah's next album, here's what it came up with:
"Eternal Love Affair" "Heavenly Highs" "Diamond Dreams" "Cosmic Serenade" "Supernova Symphony" "Celestial Rhapsody" "Galactic Diva" "Majestic Melodies" "Orbiting Oasis" "Stellar Sonata"
What's your fave?

I think she always goes on vacation before promotion. In addition, it's been awhile since Caution. Furthermore, it's been quiet lately. We all know MC can make an album in three months. And for the record I like Rainbow. Her voice is not in great shape but she is the queen of studio magic. Even if MC is not signed, she can easily announce a signing and an album at the same time. What do y'all think?

It makes sense. Heartbreaks, traumas and dissapointments can destroy a voice, if the soul has pain, the voice gets weaker and weaker. For everyone, not just singers. I never heard about that Japanese healer, but it sounds interesting. Definitely something one could try.

Just a thought (102,516)
by Bobby A from United States

Singer Melanie Fiona lost her voice some years ago. She could not sing for longer than 30 minutes without going hoarse. One particular doctor asked her if her life had been hard for the past couple of years with some heartbreak or disappointment. She told the doctor yes and he referred her to a Japanese reiki healer. Once she had three sessions with the healer, she was able to let go of all of the trauma that caused her voice problems. Maybe this is what has happened to MC's voice. She has experienced a lot of heartbreak and disappointment during her career especially during the years of 1998-2001, 2003-2005, 2008-2010, 2013-2015, and 2018-2022.

Music Box (102,507)

What a beautiful and great post. "Every night I had my headphones on and fell asleep listening to that song." I did the same with Everything Fades Away, I thought I were the only one back then.
I became a fan with "Daydream", "Music Box" was my second album I bought and I loved it right away, still do. I get nostalgic while listening, because of all the reasons you mentioned. It is such a special album, it has a quality from the first seconds to the last. It's just overwhelming. When I listen to it now, it's like back then. There's the same feelings, it goes very deep. It's hard to describe in English, but I hope you understand. I knew a German Hip-Hop producer, he loved Everything Fades Away more than anything else. Every time we listened to it, he said only Mariah with a big smile. I think that says a lot. Yes, only Mariah could do an album like Music Box at a time where all things came together perfectly. It was and is a perfect album. Not just for lambs.

Music Box (102,505)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway

Everything Fades Away was the last track on the European version of Music Box, and is my favourite track from the album. I first became a fan after My All and my first CD by Mariah was Butterfly. But after that I bought Daydream and a friend of me gave me her Music Box CD, for a long time Everything Fades Away was my favourite song to listen to, every night I had my headphones on and fell asleep listening to that song.
What I think makes Music Box such a good album, is that it's the sound many people call the classic Mariah. When I listen to songs from Music Box, it makes me nostalgic, even though I didn't listen to it when it first came out. There are a few songs that bring me back to certain moments in life, and certain eras of time. The sound of Music Box makes you nostalgic about Mariah, her image and voice, but also to the 90s and maybe a time that now seems innocent and maybe less troublesome as compared to today's world.
Music Box is also what made Mariah an international act, brought her to super stardom, and the songs from that album is what non fan people remember the most.
Yes, it would have been really nice to get a Music Box'esque album, but to capture the era, moment and the phenomenon that was Music Box, will be hard to do.
Now I think I have to listen to Everything Fades Away.

Oh, how I want an album like that again. An album with melodies. Lyrics without mentioning spandex, helicopters, and stuff like that. An album with her singing. She can still make that. She doesn't need to sing with 5 octaves. No autotune. Give is the voice she still has instead of that sound.

So true, that's why I still buy cd's (real albums). I need something I can touch, look at the pictures, read a little text with lyrics. I also love to collect albums. A playlist or stream can never replace it. A new album with a theme, I would love that too.

Edward, I get your single idea but it breaks my heart. I feel like an album wouldn't benefit her in this current music industry. But how I miss the anticipation. I miss it being a project. Having a theme. I know it's for the nostalgia but remember waiting outside of Sam Goody or Tower Records? Remember struggling to get that plastic tape off the top of the CD? We don't get liner notes and pictures anymore. It's just sad. Imagine if movies weren't a thing and you just got a scene at a time. Imagine if a baseball game was one inning and everyone went home. I feel like an album is like a novel. A page is special but you need the entire story.

Mariah vs MC (102,418)
by MusicfanJ from Germany
| |
|
|
Great post and thoughts of you Jamie. I often think who is the real Mariah? For me it's the one during the early years too. A smart, sweet woman with an outstanding charisma, a little shy with a good sense of humour. That was her, no matter if she liked the clothes or not, she was natural. Even the first little diva antics were lovable. Later especially after 2001 the "diva thing" seemed more like a masquerade to protect herself. Of course everyone can act sometimes, some more, some less. But the sparkle on the eyes, a real smile says so much more. That's real.

Mariah vs MC (102,399)
by Jamie from UK
| |
|
|
Ok as a 90's fan of Mariah and a continued fan to this day, I've always struggled with Mariah and MC. Whilst I like them both I'm more swayed towards Mariah. I've always wondered what she thinks, as Mariah did she always want to break away and be MC, or now does she long to be Mariah again? I say this because she always says how controlled she was, yet now every opportunity she gets she shows pics etc of her earlier career. Watching her earlier videos she is so natural and composed something I don't think can be forced or mimicked. So I often wonder who is the the real Mariah/MC? Don't get me wrong I love both, but I often wonder what happened that made the drastic change, I don't believe it was all Tommy as he could have dressed her in all he liked, but like I said you can't mimic those natural early performances. I get people change, I've changed myself, but not so drastically like she has. I always wonder who the happiest one was. To me she looks more happy in the early Mariah days when she was more wholesome, but would love to hear your spin on things. This all came from watching ATYNAF from Proctors Theatre, which to me is one of her best performances. I'm not looking to be judgmental I'm honestly just looking for peoples spin on things as it genuinely interests me.

Someday AMA 1991 (102,357)

"Confidence and charisma then." So true. Everything you said, I see it the same way. Mariah was unstoppable then. The whole 90ies. Every time I watch a clip from that time, I still can't believe. That talent, the look, the voice and yes her charisma. (It could have melt an iceberg.) I can't watch the "I don't" video, I've watched maybe seven times. But I watch all clips from the 90ies over and over again. It's magic. Mariah's shyness was the sweetest thing. Just adorable. A sweetheart everyone loved. With a voice that goes straight to your heart and stays there forever.

Just watched Mariah Someday live at the AMA's in 91 on [YouTube]. My next suggested video was I Don't, how did [YouTube] come up with that. It was actually quite scary to see the change. Mariah always said how shy she was back then, but looking back she actually had more confidence and charisma then. Maybe because she had the voice at her disposal. But it's easy to see why she became America's sweetheart back then, she truly was amazing.

Ain't No Other Fan (102,332)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway

I have just watched the YouTube video made by Ain't No Other Fan, the video name is long, but here it comes: "The one where Mariah Carey got *high* and proved her voice."
It's from her Jamaican concert a few years back, and yes, we all know she was influenced by something, and it was not Chardonnay, darlin'.
The performance is a mess, but hell, Mariah was so at ease that evening that she hit high notes and had runs she hadn't done in years and haven't done since. I can admit that I have taken the same substance as Mariah that evening sometimes, aan it really eases you off, makes you feel comfortable, down to earth, high in confidence and really good about yourself.
I have watched the video, and all I can say is, if that is what make our girl Mariah relax and hit those high notes and runs, we know she can make, well hell, she should really hit them joints every show, relax, and show them girls and boys how you really sing.

I just watched a virtual interview with Brenda K Starr from 2021, it was great to see her be so lovely and complementary about Mariah. It was nice to see how much she does actually care about Mariah although they have fallen out at times. She has nothing but praise for Mariah and wishes her well in all she does. I think it must be hard when you have been that close to someone and they are propelled into super stardom, as the artist doesn't always have control over their life.

Great post. Absolutely yes to this "the fact that she was stunningly beautiful and an equally uniquely phenomenal singer as she was a songwriter, which definitely caused envy, because honestly which one of her contemporaries was actually doing it like her?"
I think most of the people were simply jealous of her because of all the reasons. She was too perfect, she had everything. It's like you said, the most wonderful voice, the look and her powerful husband back then. Plus her charisma, charming and sweet. I was just watching "Without you", "One sweet day" and "Thank God I found you" on YouTube, I've watched hundred times in my life and I'm still blown away about her talent and her voice. Plus she has the most beautiful smile and eyes. Superstar power all over.

My personal theory is there's multiple layers as to why Mariah was never as celebrated as Whitney (and Beyoncé) ie the industry favorite. I honestly feel like the Whitney comparisons in the beginning is/was a factor. Everyone lauded Whitney as the undisputed best voice ever, until MC hit the scene and shook things up a bit. I believe many people who were diehard Whitney supporters, felt the need to downplay Mariah's talent and success) in solidarity to Whitney Houston. The supposed rivalry created this (most of the time) unspoken great divide.
Then there's Tommy. I believe he had a lot to do with her lack of Grammy wins for multiple reasons. I'll start with the fact that he tried to use Mariah passing for white as a privilege. I know first hand that this perception that "Mariah didn't want people to know that she was part black at first" hurt her in the court of public opinion specifically in the black community back then, and maybe in the industry amongst her black peers. Then there's the machine that was behind her, the fact that she was stunningly beautiful and an equally uniquely phenomenal singer as she was a songwriter, which definitely caused envy, because honestly which one of her contemporaries was actually doing it like her? Seriously, until this day nobody is really doing it on the level Mariah did it as a singer/songwriter. So yes people were jealous and bias against her, and what made it worse is that they couldn't honestly with a good heart deny her extraordinary talent. Like many have said, she actually has the chops to back up all the astronomical success she's had.
I don't care what generation you come from, one thing that you absolutely can not do is deny Mariah's talent and impact. She's one of the most ordained purposeful artist ever, so trying to discredit her in any way falls very short and holds no weight.
I've read the comments and the people ie the general public unanimously agreed that Mariah deserved to be in the top five. That's all that matters. She's always been the peoples champ and not the industry favorite. Like many have stated no amount of payola in the world can cause people to really purchase your music, watch your videos, and curate three decades of continuous organic success. My second favorite female singer is simply straight up jealous of my first favorite, and she resents the fact that her solo career wasn't as illustrious as Mariah's. Also allow me to add that, I specifically liked Chaka Khan with the band Rufus, I may like only a couple of her solo hits, so that's that. Maybe she also resents that her best music is connected to the band and not just her, unlike Mariah who's a stand alone hit maker.

Yes, sadly the golden days of music are over. I miss heart and soul in the music. In the past we had wonderful melodies with good lyrics or at least music that was fun (like summer hits and so on).
Hopefully there will come a time where good music will have a comeback. I listen a lot to Soul and Jazz besides Mariah. And those old songs are all masterpieces and the artists were really artists who could sing or play. It's unbelievable that songs with that quality are often 50-60 years old.

Music has been very boring and no excitement on the pop radio this year. I really feel this is the trend that is here to stay for a very long time. I do like the new Kali Uchis album Red Moon On Venus. It is a moody dreamy album about heartbreak.

No, I didn't. But Paula Abdul always seemed to me like an older J.Lo.
