I am glad she's doing something a bit different and getting more creative. She can't always pander to her fans. This is a good start.

I hope is a cute bop. It's a collab with Dj Mustard and I liked his work with Nick Jonas on Anywhere.

Re: GTFO on the charts? (84,005) (84,018)
by jaker20 from US

It's possible. Cher got the biggest hit and album of her career in her 50s. Mariah however came out with a bang and burned out creatively in her 40s. Cher's career was a real sprint and came out with spectacular shows in her 60s and just last year at 71 at the Grammys. So it's possible. She needs to leave behind that diva big vocals career, and focus on her songwriting and production-based performances. Preserve that in history and time to express her art in another way.

Re: AMA confirmation (84,012) (84,017)

It's only a good promo if she can actually deliver. Otherwise, she's better off dropping the album and I bet it will be a hit based on her name alone. It may not be a massive hit but at least not an embarrassment. It's the same as her video. If she can't put together a good video, she's better off not making one. Because it creates an opposite effect if you can't deliver.

AMA and lack of effort in performing (84,016)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
It's only a good promo if she can really perform. Otherwise, it actually hurts whatever she is promoting. Why can't she do something similar to that It's Like That at VH1? It was not dependent on her vocals but people don't mind. Because they had fun. It was about putting on a show and a good production that seem like she actually prepared for it. Not just stand on a corner and lip notes we all know she can't reach.

Re: Mariah's voice and breath control (83,982) (83,986)

Mariah should pursue that singer/songwriter route. In fact, that is probably the only path that will give her a true comeback. The voice is not the same, give it up already. She will always be forever considered one of the greatest vocals ever. But she didn't become Mariah just because of that. What sets her apart from other singing divas is her songwriting and her ability to tap into pop sentiments. And that's what she needs to focus now. Attempting to sing like her past self just betrays the legacy of those songs. She, and her fans, need to refocus and that is taking the singer/songwriter route or maybe even club or dance music where she won't rely heavily on her voice. But her fans are just as hard-headed as her so she's kinda stuck.

Re: Mariah was number 2 on iTunes/top 10 all week (83,985)

It did well when it was released because Mariah has a lot of fans and the song is actually good. But did you notice, as soon as the video was released, the song dropped faster. She has trouble crossing over and she can't rely on her fans alone. It's the same pattern for every single she released this decade. The most obvious example is Beautiful, which rose on the strength of her name and because it actually was a good song. But as soon as that overhyped video was released on Idol, the song dropped. She has an image problem. In fact I would say she has this problem immediately after TEOM, and that's why her decline to E=MC2 was sharp. Love Mimi but she will no longer cross over because she is looking very cheap with bikini and lingerie videos that doesn't help the song. At all.

She needs lighter bouncier bops (83,984)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
That she can sing live and walk around the stage. Or something like ABMBaby that is easier to sing. Her catalog is hard to sing and will shut her voice completely if she go this rate. Maybe even bouncier dance tracks that requires some production to cover some of the lipping and make people focus on the production and not just her voice. Or like half and half My All remix she used to do. She has to be smart in her new era or else her career will end sooner than it should. She already has a solid big vocals catalog, now she needs to focus on the production.

It's a decent performance that can be improved (83,967)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|

Performance isn't always about great vocals. A few things that lift it above typical Mariah. One is she actually didn't lip that much. She did, but less so than previous ones. That intro of Emotions was kind of rough but she tried and that's what matters most. We all know she added that song just to remind us who owns that song. Second, she actually moved more than usual. This is the part that she needs to put more effort cause the audience come alive during ABMB when she moved around. She should have brought her quirky one liners and playfulness that we see during her shows. But she's very insecure that night, she doesn't want to interact much. Still an improvement from past where she just stands and doesn't even talk. Third, the vocals are surprisingly better. She is more rested. Her timings are good. She knew when she's gonna hit it or not and learned to adjust. Look, how many times do you need to be told that her voice has changed? You just need to get used to it because frankly we've seen worse.

I liked it overall. It actually got more interesting when she got close to the audience during ABMB. She needs to do that more. She just needs to more around the stage more. It's not always about the perfect vocals, but how she engages with the audience and she accomplished that with ABMB. The rest needed more production. Overall I actually liked it.

I think Mariah knows radio won't play her anymore anyway so she just let those lyrics honest out. I like where this is going. The beats and the melody is Mariah in her most inspired in a long time.

GTFO (83,788)

I actually liked it. Definitely an improvement from I Don't. The song is amusing because it has a slow beat but the lyrics are ruthless lol. When I saw the video last night I thought it's awful, another I Don't mess. Then I saw it again today and I kinda got it. Mariah is in an apartment probably must after sending her man out the door, dishes are undone and she's adjusting. It's not high concept, very 80s even 90s, I would have wanted a bit more interesting, like Mariah walking down the street or driving. Still overall, it's growing on me, her best effort since Beautiful, in fact that video really has no concept either.

I think overall it was ok. It was largely unspectacular but not completely awful. From what I read the ratings were all-time low. It's interesting that Mariah's new year's performance was last year's highest rated musical. It tells you Mariah's name alone, by herself, has the ability to pull in viewers.

Madonna's albums after she turned 50 are also about love and relationships. She just express it in creative ways. Cher's Believe is also about love, it just so happen to be a dance track. Some artists write about loss, even death in a dance track. And Mariah has written about love and relationships in many creative ways in the past, just see Emancipation and that's after Butterfly. If that's not as honest as Butterfly then I don't want her to be honest because that album is great. But that's not the problem. The problem is she's not putting that much effort anymore. She's not that serious. She probably spent 5 hours getting ready to look amazing in that studio pic and she looks drunk. Madonna looks like she worked in the studio, looking casual wearing jeans like she actually did something. Oh well. Maybe Mariah has a better place in writing for soundtracks, not studio albums. Her most successful work the past 10 years has been for soundtracks. They may not be massive hits but they're inspired and she's not embarrassing herself.

That's literally what came to my mind. Madonna teased being in studio so she does the same. Its so pathetic. Madonna is actually still trying to be creative. I don't like her music. I think it's awful. But I respect her because she is actually trying and pushing and letting her brain go to different places. Mariah meanwhile releases I Don't song with a tacky video of her endlessly touching herself. Gross. No creativity.

Re: Will we ever see a new album? (80,404) (80,406)
by jaker20 from US

Mariah's path to a successful new album and single is not her voice but the cool club sound, the collabs and midtempo bops. Why can't she write something like Julia Michaels' Issues? She can slay that range of vocals now and its themes transcend age. People complain Mariah's voice isn't up to par now is why she's no longer slaying the charts. But I always believed she's a pop genius and that her voice, as legendary as it is, is only second to that. That's what separates her from Celine and Whitney that sometimes I cringe at the comparison. So I'm more concerned about her losing her cool songwriting sensibilities, that or she's just not inspired to write anymore. Unforgettable with French Montana was a good direction but she didn't even write that one.

The tv promos leading to the show, and throughout the night it was about Mariah's name. People tuned in for her. So studio's and Mariah's team should take note of this and use that high awareness to come up with something great this year.

Mariah should definitely perform at the Golden Globes because sadly she's not getting that Oscar nom. Her song wasn't on the shortlist released last month. But I don't know if Golden Globes even have singing performances. If they do, she definitely should.

It shows that she really does care for fans. She really tries. And that's more than I can ask for. Also, it's incredible that 27 years into her career and she's still headlining such a big event. She slayed Hero, once she got comfortable. So proud of her.
