I became a lamb during that period. My first Mariah album was "Rainbow", and I absolutely loved all of the MTV specials. I remember going out to Best Buy and Sam Goody in middle school to buy the "Loverboy" single and "Glitter" album. I think I went out to Best Buy on 9/11/01 to buy the "Glitter" album because we were released from school early that day.

"The 1997-2001 period of Mariah's career is one of her most fascinating." Absolutely. There was so much going on. I was a teen back then and witnessed that time. It was a very special time. (Personally as well.) I also loved all her MTV documentaries and specials. Mariah was everywhere. Touring, on TV and radio. Then came 9/11 and and the world had changed. I still miss the 90ies.

I need a 25th anniversary deluxe version of "Glitter" with Mariah's recording of the "Lillie's Blues" song from the beginning scene of the film.
I also need full remix EPs on streaming for "Loverboy", "Never Too Far", "Never Too Far/Hero Medley", "Don't Stop (Funkin' for Jamaica)", and whatever else Mariah is holding back from the Glitter era. She worked on that project from 1997-2001. There's got to be more than just the original "Loverboy" and the cover of "Out Here On My Own". Weren't there a couple of other song titles that came up during that era - "Every Time", "Anything Can Happen", "The Flow", etc.
I'd also love a high quality release of that Fox Family documentary did on the making of "Glitter" - I still love watching it on YouTube. I also recall a really great podcast episode from "The Mariah Report" where the hosts dive deep into how different the original concept for "Glitter" was before it was filmed and when it was known as "All That Glitters".
The 1997-2001 period of Mariah's career is one of her most fascinating and prolific periods. She was working on so many different things (three albums, one compilation, multiple films, two tours) and she finally got her independence from Tommy. What a magical time period. And she looked gorgeous too, though the 2001 era platinum blonde hairstyle wasn't my favorite.

I think I understand what you mean Will, but please no more perfumes or cosmetics from Mariah. I need new music. A jazz album, a duets album, Rarities part 2, the hidden grunge album. A singer should focus on music. If the inspiration is gone, then Mariah could take a longer break. One more album would be nice. Caution shouldn't be the last.

Loverboy (108,218)

I have always wondered something about one of the lines in "Loverboy". When Mariah sings "When he invites me over, I come every time," did she mean she goes over to hang with him every time she is invited or does she mean that he brings her to orgasm every time? She was dating Luis at the time the song was recorded, so if it's the latter, he must have been loving her down.
The songs lyrics give me the same vibe as the "Honey" lyrics where I am unsure if Mariah's being intentionally provocative or doing her coquettish "I'm Mary Poppins" shtick and playing dumb about the double entendres lol.

Mariah doesn't need no man (108,192)
by BFF from United States

I've been very worried about Mariah for quite some time - her psychological and physical health. I think she's been very isolated since 2013/14 and has been on "autopilot" with residencies and Christmas tours to just "keep things moving". Maybe I'm projecting my own experiences onto Mariah, but I can attest to how taxing it can be on the body/spirit when you go for long periods of time without feeling physically/psychologically safe and without having anyone to talk to or rely upon. I've been in that space for a while now and have come in and out of it through my life. In a way, Mariah has always been very isolated but not having a close "safe" partner or friends who are not on the payroll alongside the stuff with her voice is a lot to deal with.

Mariah doesn't need no man (108,188)
by Jamie from UK

I think she needs to reevaluate her situation, while she isn't broke she obviously isn't getting as much income as before. She's created this whole diva persona and whilst it worked once I don't feel it benefits her anymore. She should reduce expenditures and just focus on herself and kids. She doesn't need to live such an extravagant lifestyle especially with reports that it costs 30 thousand plus just for her to leave the house. I think the whole diva thing is part of the problem, she's lost who she really is. She seemed more together after she had her initial breakdown than she does now. Now it feels like she's lost her personality too.

"Lead the Way" has such a powerful lyrical message and the way she sings it is just amazing. The same with "Never Too Far", "Reflections", and "Twister". What wonderful and sadly overlooked gems in her catalog.
Experiencing what I'm experiencing with this person right now has given LTW in a whole new meaning. It's such a powerful song in the same way that "Vision of Love" was.

What a heartfelt comment. It was really nice to read. I still love the Glitter ballads too. Wonderful lyrics, wonderful melodies. The 80ies up-tempos are also so good and underrated. Lately I enjoy the original Firecracker version more and more. And "Out here on my own" from that era is outstanding. It somehow "hits different" these days while listening. But back to your post "Lead the way" is one of her best ballads from her unbelievable music catalogue.

Frustrated lamb (108,178)
by BFF from United States
| |
|
|
I think the main problem for Mariah in relationships is that (other than Luis Miguel and Derek Jeter) she tends to date men who are less famous than her and who end up playing a role of "fan" rather than equal partner. Luis Miguel was a superstar in Latin Music, and Derek Jeter's baseball career made him a star.
With Nick and Bryan, it sometimes felt like they "worshipped" her rather than seeing her as a human being. That probably feels good for a while, but at a certain point, it probably becomes stifling for both parties involved. I'm not sure what her relationship with Mark Sudack was like because that was kept really private. But I'm sure Mariah herself is very afraid of getting into another situation like the one she had with Tommy Mottolla, so I can understand the temptation to want to be positioned as an "alpha" in the relationship. I really feel for Mariah in this regard. I'm sure it's very hard to trust people and let her guard down.
Hopefully Mariah can get back to a place where she feels inspired again. It's really hard to watch years pass and see nothing other than Vegas residencies and Christmas tours. Things really just seemed to go very wrong around 2013/14 when she couldn't get "The Art of Letting Go" out the door in its original iteration.

No, you're not the only one. I noticed it as well. I completely see it like you've written. Since the separation of Tanaka, the spark has gone. He was good for her happiness. It's so sad that it didn't last. I also believe Mariah needs a partner who is really there for her. Being alone is never easy, but for Mariah it seems to be a even harder and not right. Remember when she was with Luis Miguel, if you watch all the old interviews during that time Mariah was shining like the brightest star. Her eyes and smile were telling everything. With Nick at the beginning it was almost the same. With Brian Tanaka she seemed to get her inner glow back again. Of course we don't know what's really going on. But even Brian doesn't look the same on the latest pics. I don't believe that he was only loving the lifestyle and money. Anyway, I want that happy Mariah back. I don't need another number one, I just want to see her truly happy.

MC doing the Superbowl (108,172)
by BFF from United States
| |
|
|
People really seemed to have strong opinions about Kendrick Lamar's performance. I didn't watch the Super Bowl at all and have no plans to watch the performance. As Mariah would say in her best Austin Powers imitation, "It's not my bag, baby."
It's hard for me to get behind much rap music, specifically male artists. Too much of it is about excessive displays of masculinity and showing how hard one can be. There's no softness or vulnerability save for maybe a few artists. Common, Q-Tip, Andre 3000, etc are a few that come to mind as exceptions.
Mariah has done a good job of getting her rap collaborators to complement her sound, and her incorporation of hip-hop has been largely tasteful and done well.
But I don't usually listen to the solo stuff from Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, etc unless it has a decent hook from a good featured singer (i.e. "Run this Town", "Empire State of Mind").

After that lame performance from Kenderick Lamar, there will never be another rapper who will get the chance to do the Superbowl half-time show. His performance was horrible. It was something you would see Pepsi sponsor at a summer concert series. I agree with Randy. MC would have more engaging that what Kenderick Lamar gave us for 13 minutes. I am so sick of his beef with Drake. Lady Gaga or Beyonce will be the Superbowl half-time performer in 2026.

I've had this song on repeat the last couple of days. It's the perfect song for when someone unexpectedly comes into your life. You had thought about giving up and worried that you'd end up alone, but you can feel the winds shifting. That's the vibe I'm on right now.

I wonder what, if anything, Mariah has planned for the 30th anniversary of the release of "Daydream" this year. We got "One Night" and "Slipping Away" on "The Rarities" track list along with the Tokyo Dome concert from the "Daydream" tour. But surely Mariah has other leftover material from the "Daydream" sessions outside of "Someone's Ugly Daughter"?

There were some really great performances of "Make it Happen" on various stops of the Butterfly, Rainbow, and Charmbracelet world tours. It would be hard for me to choose one. I think the song became much more dynamic when she and the singers added the "Don't Let Go" chants near the end. Live performances of "Make it Happen" are vastly superior to the studio version for this reason.

Of all her live performances of "Make It Happen", VH1 Divas Live 1998 is my favorite. I will never get tired of watching it. The hair, the outfit, the raspy voice, the choir, the band, the stage, and the audience's engagement through dancing are all perfection.

Barbra and Mariah (108,145)
by BFF from United States

My only problem with the Streisand comparison is that Streisand does not write or produce like Mariah does. It's very easy to produce multiple albums a year when other people hand you songs to record.
Some singer-songwriters take long breaks between albums. Mariah's probably one of the few "pop/soul" singers who also writes/produces.
She is definitely overdue for a new album, but maybe Mariah has writer's block or has scrapped and started/restarted material that didn't feel right. I know Jewel said she often takes long breaks between albums because she needs new experiences to draw from.

by jaker20 from US

|
Barbra: 36 studio albums, 12 compilations, and 15 soundtracks
Mariah: 15 studio albums, 6 compilations. 0 soundtracks
Do you see where I'm going here? 2 years later, the album she's saying already have 5 songs done, and she still can't finish it. And now Barbra, who is 82 is releasing another album, while Mariah is doing Vegas with no new song, not even a collab, a remix, or anything.
It is so annoying that every single year, after very Christmas peaks, she can't come up with something, anything. Annoying and sad really. Forget voice or anything, I don't think she's got artistry left anymore tbh. Voice can be layered, remixed and be done with studio work. Artistry you can't, that's really what's she's lost.

I agree. I think it's so regrettable that critics and the award shows did not properly appreciate Mariah during her prime years. "Butterfly" was such a great album and should have been nominated for more awards. Sony also should have promoted it better and allowed "Breakdown" and/or "The Roof" to be official singles in the United States. It's also frustrating that "Butterfly" received a radio-only release, as it definitely could have gone to #1 and is one of her best ballads.
"Butterfly" the song was nominated for best pop vocal performance but lost to Sarah McLachlan's "Building a Mystery", which I thought deserved the award. But Mariah should have gotten something for the album.

Grammys that Mariah was nominated for and should have won by the year:
1991 "Vision of Love" should have won for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It's a better song and vocal performance than any of the others that nominated.
1996 "Daydream" should have won Best Pop Vocal Album. Joni Mitchell's "Turbulent Indigo" is not anywhere near Mitchell's best work, and "Daydream" is a better album. "One Sweet Day" should have won "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals" and "Record of the Year". I loved Seal's "Kiss From a Rose", but it didn't need to win Song of the Year and Record of the Year. And why wasn't "One Sweet Day" nominated for "Song of the Year"?
2000 "When You Believe" should have won "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals". "Smooth" by Santana and Rob Thomas did not need to win in this category.
2006 "We Belong Together" should have won Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It is undeniable that this song was the biggest of the year, and to give the awards to Green Day and U2 was slap in the face to Mariah when she had a great year.

I do agree with you. I heard she has people that write for her and she doesn't give them their credit. I think she is over rated and she is not as gifted as a singer as Mariah or songwriter when it comes to songwriting and singing that's all Mariah. Mariah can't sing like she used to but in her prime Mariah was a force to be reckoned with, her and Whitney. Beyoncé only got that album of the year because [Jay Z] moaned and complained at last year Grammys. When Beyonce first started her solo career it seemed like she couldn't do anything without [Jay] from [Crazy in love] to Dejuve, she have had some good songs but she is not as good as Whitney or Mariah. Those women had some phenomenal voices in their prime. Beyoncé to me is just okay that is it. Another I would like to add is that she is no Michael Jackson either. Michael was. On some other level to me she isn't on I got all of Whitney. Mariah and Michael. I brought [Dangerously in love] and B Day I have only brought like 3 [Beyonce] albums and it was only 3 to 3 songs on each that I liked. With the other three I liked the majority of the songs and I feel like Mariah has always been robbed by the Grammys if you can give Beyonce all those Grammys you can give Mariah some too. To me I think the Grammys lost their credibility.

Beyoncé's music was decent at the beginning of her solo career up until the album "4". Particularly, "B'Day" had some good songs on it.
Her recent albums often seem like they are written/produced by committees of tastemakers rather than organically produced as collaborations. And she just doesn't have deep, meaningful songs the way that Mariah and others do.
It also feels wrong that Beyoncé has more Grammy Awards than Aretha Franklin. The Recording Academy has really eroded its credibility with these types of decisions.

I would love for Mariah to release a covers compilation album. She has performed, recorded, and released so many great ones that it would be nice to have them all in one place. This is what my track listing would look like:
1. Don't Play that Song (live from Tatou Club 1990) 2. I'll Be There (TOTP or MTV Unplugged) 3. Without You 4. My Prayer 5. Just Be Good to Me (Music Box or Daydream tour live) 6. The Beautiful Ones 7. If Only You Knew (Essence Awards) 8. Chain of Fools (Divas Live) 9. Sweetheart 10. I Still Believe 11. Do You Know Where You're Going To? 12. Hopelessly Devoted to You (Butterfly tour) 13. Against All Odds 14. Out Here On My Own 15. Didn't Mean to Turn You On 16. Last Night a DJ Saved My Life (No Rap) 17. Bringin' On the Heartbreak 18. You and I (BET Walk of Fame) 19. Help Me Make it Through the Night (from "Tennessee") 20. I Want to Know What Love Is 21. One More Try 22. Don't Explain (Elusive Chanteuse tour) 23. Lullaby of Birdland (Elusive Chanteuse tour) 24. Nevertheless (I'm In Love With You)
There are a couple of others songs she interpolated on recordings or remixes - "Stay A Little While Child", "Make It Last Forever", "If You Should Ever Be Lonely", "Pure Imagination", "Funkin' for Jamaica", etc - but I think that covers most or all of them.

Listening to some of the Butterfly tour audio released on the "Mariah Station Concerts" got me to thinking about what would have happened if Mariah had continued the tour in North America. I know she stopped it after the Hawaii date because she wanted to film "Double O Soul" with Chris Tucker. Does anyone know/remember what dates were planned? Were they similar to the ones she eventually committed to in North America for the Rainbow tour?
By the way, Mariah Station Concerts has some great exclusive audio and video from that tour. I think the person who runs it has been buying rare/unreleased footage from engineers who worked on the tour's Australia dates.

My 2025 - hopes, dreams, wishes, and prayers for Mariah Carey (108,076)
by BFF from United States

To me, "Charmbracelet" was too long, needed stronger less detached vocals, and needed an uptempo lead single rather than a ballad. Unfortunately, most of the songs included were mid-tempos or ballads and many sounded too similar. Songs like "You Had Your Chance", "Irresistible", and "Lullaby" all blended together in my opinion. I found "Bringing on the Heartbreak" to be the most memorable song on the album because she really let loose vocally rather than holding back like she did on "Through the Rain". She probably needed to take more time off before releasing it, but I understood the need to get the public to forget about "Glitter" at that point.

For me Charmbracelet is another outlier album. What do you think if 7 Aurelius and Dre and Vidal were the only producers on Charmbracelet? They could have really made Charmbracelet sell more copies and not been such a disjointed album in my opinion. I feel that Lyor Cohen gave MC some bad advice by telling her to choose Through the Rain as the first single. Charmbracelet was an great album, but it could have been better.

Does anyone else like the Top of the Pops performance better than the MTV Unplugged version of it? I love that it is just Mariah and Trey accompanied by piano and the other singers. Fantastic standout amongst her early performances.

I agree. I'm not religious, and I found the post to be totally benign. I understand that people may have felt harmed in the name of religion in their past(s). I definitely have felt harmed in the name of religion in my past, but that doesn't mean that we get to label all religious people or religious references are bad or suspect. I would think that anyone who describes themselves as progressive would welcome diversity of thought and freedom of expression, especially when that thought/expression is completely benign and positive.

This is a really great post about "Wishing Well" for her. I appreciate the diversity of thought you brought to this page, especially from a fanbase that should be tolerant and inclusive of all people even if some of us aren't as progressive.

It would work so well, and they seemed to have such a great rapport as collaborators. Even Dev Hynes himself thinks it's a good idea.

Now a full album produced by Dev Hynes would get MC for sure six more Grammy Awards.

I want to manifest Mariah working more with Blood Orange (Devote Hynes). I loved "Giving Me Life" on "Caution", and I loved his work with Solange Knowles on the "True" EP. I think the production on his songs (I guess you'd call his style alt-R&B/chill wave) and a more detached vocal would work well with Mariah's current voice.

I'm going to pull an RA and put it out there that I'm manifesting a March release or announcement in March from MC. Her new post kinda seems like she's ready to kick off a new era, she's also receiving an iHeartRadio Icon award in March. I had given up hope on a new album so I'm being cautiously optimistic. Also I hope whoever presents the award (and if there's a tribute) it's someone relevant.
