Re: Martyn's tribute by M featured on Billboard (75,807) (75,809)

Martyn was a legend. He just *did* stuff and was unapologetic about anything. I listened to TTEOT and felt sad when it got to the "you'll come and save my life" part and had to turn it off. But then I remembered the meet-and-greet HIV-foundation-starting Mariah Carey-scarer and how Martyn was screaming with laughter at the bat-shit crazy emails ole Juan (remember that guy? lol) was sending me and I couldn't stop smiling. I got little work done that day. It's okay to be sad but in Martyn's case it makes little sense. His every being was about being positive and having fun. One love, eh.

Could Mariah's smile look any more forced? This photo should be meme'd. Lemme give it a lil go: "Yes, Mariah, feel that? It's a gun. That's right, a gun. Now [censored] smile, Miss Moneybags."

Bill, your words moved me to tears last night. Incredible sentiment, well worded. Time to move on and try to celebrate now, I guess. He was a lively, lovely character. Upbeat Mariah tunes all day, I feel.

That you did it was great; that you tried to claim some glory for it was not. But if it resulted in Mariah knowing that Martyn was a lamb then that's awesome. What wasn't awesome was your silly drunken rant taking a pot shot at me when you know I'm pretty cut up, like some other people, of the hideous manner in which Martyn died. That drunken rambling post about you and some soft porn Titty Caca fancying the Prince William is somewhat of a disgrace and steeped in irony, and whereas before I thought of you just as someone with idiotic opinions now I find you to be incredibly immature. As a result, I promise not to acknowledge your presence if you will not acknowledge mine. Don't reply to me please and don't mention my name. Just go away.

Martyn was a guy who I got on with. We weren't best buddies. I won't do him a disservice to make this about me. We just made contact and had a giggle and made commentary. He invited me to Manchester and I put it off. I regret it. It's not about me. His relating of why that song meant so much to him after I quizzed him about drinking along and crying to it was heartfelt and I won't do him the disservice of relating why here. It's not about me, it's about him. I'm sorry that he won't ever listen to Mariah again and take comfort in her music. I'm sorry that he was cut down in his prime, on the eve of an adventure that he sought out. I'm sorry that he no longer lives and that we will carry on. Devastated for him and him alone. I will go to the funeral, if it's an open one, which, given the numbers of people who admired him, it possibly will be. I am open if anyone wants to meet up for it but I'm happy to stand at the back and say goodbye. If not just for this board. I was jealous of him, in all honesty. When talking to him, about how positive and open to life he was. I genuinely was. YouTube him. See what an amazingly positive life he led. Death is the great leveller, isn't it? I'm going to pray tonight. I haven't done that since I was a child. And I'm not sure what that means. But a prayer I will say. And if there is an afterlife, and they can see what we are doing then let this be the change in the board that is needed. And let him read how much he was loved. And maybe that's how we should process this. We should talk to Mariah and tell her who the Martyns of the world are and how we want her to be great. He loved her. We all do. I'm not on social media. So I'm glad this board is here. It's brilliant. It's about Martyn. That's the way it should be.

I am not sure how to process this. Terribly affected. I only spoke with him Friday about the messages here. Can't help thinking if I hadn't then he would have behaved differently. I know that's totally stupid. But I can't believe this has happened to him and feel bewildered that his face is all over the news. I'm so sad. I can't listen to Till The End of Time. He loved this board, he would laugh at the polar opposite views and he loved Mariah so much. I'm going to go to the funeral if it is an open funeral just to pay my respects to a truly unique camp outrageous gift. If anyone else would like to go message me and we can go together. Life is really short. We don't always agree but we are one in our passions. One of us is gone and I'm so sad I can't process this. I promise to try to show as much love toward the rest of you as I can and let that be his legacy in *my* life. I wish each and every one of you, whether we agree or disagree, whether we love the same way or do not, a long and happy life.

Martyn is likely either in hospital and as yet unidentified, or possibly no longer with us. Until news of what has happened to him comes to light, I think we should hold off on any other posts out of respect. Martyn is a lifelong Mariah fan, an avid contributor to this board and a pretty awesome person. Out of respect, let us hold off on anything else. He is, after all, "one of our own". And I would go to the church of any of your gods that looks after him. He *must* be okay. This cannot have happened.

Ages (75,457)
by Andrew from UK

|

Truly a good idea. For the few who have posted their ages, it would suggest Mariah's remaining fans/lambs are those who were teenagers when she excelled in creativity and stood out. What will come of the posting of ages, though? I find this quite interesting in re: TEOM. TEOM happened when we were all mid-twenties, possibly: still young, still with Mariah in mind and looking for a rejuvenation of our youth with, admittedly, a killer delivery that bested every other artist on the planet at the time (I relate often trying to get to the store when I had meningitis). Was TEOM a result of people in their 20's reliving their youth and rejoicing that they got to say to the other people "She's back"/"She never went away" etc.? And I ask this in all sincerity: was TEOM and Eequals just a revisiting of times past? If so, Mariah's success, then, cannot be repeated, surely? I know people are no longer listening, and (Eddie is bang on) she has damaged herself so much as to not be taken as a credible music artist. But was Mariah's rebirth in 2005 nostalgia in itself? Did what we want to happen now actually happen over ten years ago and we have just relabelled it?

To quote Rachel in Friends: "Oh, I'm sorry. Did my back hurt your knife?" Go side with the Americans. "Dark and sinister man, have at thee." Hmph. God blesses America. But he saves the Queen. You can't bring the gun back to the UK, but you best book two seats on that there return flight for your ass. Good luck with your US trip buddy. Further: if anyone were to doubt Martyn's love for Mariah, watch Couples Come Dine With Me, a British TV show, and take a look at Martyn's bedroom wall. Not sure it can be beaten.

Haha. Genuinely my French friend (a real French person, but no accordion, cigarette or Renault) once recorded it. I messaged her in Lyons to ask if she had it but, alas, it was too spectacular for her phone. "Shippin' Randrew" lmao. Lovin' me some Mimi L. Whoda thunk it?

I can't. To quote Mimi L. I can't. What is it about Right To Dream that you love? Allow me to tell you what it means to me: it represents the most depressive, dustbowl, devoid-of-hope, depressing, whiney, un-inflected tinny crap I've ever heard. It relinquishes me of hope. It makes the world a sadder place. Now, the Brandons of the world, or the Edouards of the world, will likely say it is "a genius creation that she didn't mean to depress people, and you just don't get it, know wah I'm sayen? Mariah is awesome, you just don't get that she's still awesome. You just don't get it." But, Randy Randy Randy, just explain. What is it about this song? Once and for all. State your purpose. Because Mimi L just can't. And Brandon always will. And even if he can't. He [censored] does.

Re: The ultimate Mariah Carey song poll (75,286) (75,290)

Eddie, Dearest, lovely words but misguided topic. Hero is Mariah's signature song. It is her ultimate song. It is what she is known for. It is the song to which everyone at the table knows the words and melody without mistake. It is the song to which everyone will join in. It is a song that people identify with. It's also my karaoke song. Well, that and the Bear Necessities. Which I think Mariah should cover. It would be lyrically superior to anything she has written herself lately.

I recall an interview with Mariah where someone said VOL was her best song and she made a sarcastic comment to the tune of "Hopefully I've gotten better since the beginning." Which is a fair point. She did.

The turd turbulence (75,231)
by Andrew from UK

Everyone bangs on about the people Mariah employs. Why does nobody put the responsibility at Mariah's door to write good music, sing well and look good? You can't polish a turd. When does the responsibility become Mariah's to wake up and stop acting like a loser?
