Well, I really thought she was going to have MYM on the setlist for these Christmas shows, but she only performed the first verse and chorus a capella. I think she sounds beautiful.

We can agree to disagree. And that's beautiful, isn't it? Like when I say I love I Don't, and even like the video despite it being filmed on Mishka's iPhone, I'm just making a statement of my own opinion.

I just watched it for a second time and I thought it was hilarious. Sometimes I'm glad she's just herself and puts her big eccentric dramatic personality on display. Personally I thought it was the perfect outlet for it, and their off the wall banter worked well.

Chart question (101,620)
by enwar00 from usa
| |
|
|
A song was only allowed to chart on the Hot 100 when it was released for sale as a physical single. So they would release that when the song was around its peak at radio airplay. Artists who sold a lot of singles and had heavy airplay would debut high. Yes, Butterfly could have been #1 or close to it had it been released as a physical single.

Chart question (101,617)
by Robert-Anthony from United States
| |
|
|
Does anyone remember Columbia's marketing and chart strategy in 1995-1997 to cause Fantasy, One Sweet Day, and Honey to debut at #1 on Hot 100? It had to be more than radio airplay and physical sales. I think back then that new singles were released to radio and retailers on Tuesday. MC only did it during that time only. Butterfly could have done the same thing, but Tommy must have pulled all Butterfly marketing money to lessen the shine on the song's poignant message and lyrics that made him not too happy about his wife breaking free from him.

Concert in Saudi Arabia (101,525)
by enwar00 from usa

Yikes. Sounds bad. Honestly I didn't even bother watching the Global Citizens performance either. A few awful clips like the one here and I heard her start talking about the hair and make up and I had no interest. To me the AIWFCIY performance in the freezing cold and the NYE performance even sounded better. Well, we'll always have the music.

I've seen most of the clips. My All was particularly bad as she lipped the chorus and, of course, carried on miming when they playback stopped and had to awkwardly start singing. It was an embarrassment, and a disaster. None of Mariah's peers or anyone of her status would have done such a performance. Frankly I don't really know why she bothers. She has her money, she has her legacy, she has her records. Why put herself, and us, through these dreadful performances time and time again.

Bill, I absolutely agree with your point about "I'll be Lovin' u Long Time". That song is unbelievable and I'm shocked it didn't go to the top 5 (#58 on Billboard wasn't enough appreciation for such a jam). But to say Glitter wasn't as good as Rainbow is beyond offensive. I don't like Music Box, but I can understand its mastery. Glitter was a masterpiece, a far superior album to Rainbow IMO. Rainbow was a marketing and PR success, the actual music... It's such a hard album to listen start to finish. Most of Mariah's albums I can only listen start to finish. Rainbow and MIAMTEC are the two albums I feel have no flow or smoothness. They are a mish-mash of songs that don't flow or have a vibe imo.
Emotions, Butterfly, MOAIA and Caution are the most vibe centric albums, listen start to finish albums Mimi has produced.

Re: If Butterfly single was released (101,240) (101,254)
by enwar00 from usa

In 1997 the Hot 100 was based off of airplay and sales. Butterfly reached #16 on the airplay chart. To compare, My All and Thank God I Found You both reached #15 in airplay, so very very similar, and both made it to #1 on the Hot 100 because of their strong sales. Because of that I think Butterfly had a good chance of reaching #1 if released commercially. Even if just for one week, like how Carrie Underwood interrupted We Belong Together at #1 (I'm still annoyed by that ).

Butterfly Tour (101,218)

Would be/have been cool if they release(d) the Butterfly Tour from Hawaii for this 25 minute anniversary. That performance looks so good, and I feel like we got jipped with the Around The World DVD. They came through with the Daydream Tour for its 25th in 2020 during MC30, so why not continue that trend? Well, here's hoping for it tomorrow.

Funny that you say that Stacey because the upper and lower register harmonizing is something I've always loved about Melt Away during its second verse. One of the highlights of the Daydream album for me was hearing those two heavenly sounds at the same time. Such a calming song. Love the focus on the luscious lower register during the first verse too. Wow that voice was once in a lifetime wasn't it? Great production from Mariah. Daydream is a classic now. Glad to see Fantasy having a resurgence. Of course Breakdown is a classic too.

Re: Blending eras (99,388) (99,392)
by enwar00 from usa

Cool question. I may be the only one and it may sound crazy because one is one of my least favorite and the other is one of my favorites, but honestly I've always thought Charmbracelet and The Emancipation of Mimi were very similar. Of course not the vocals, because one is 15 songs full of whispers and the other was "the return of the voice". It's probably that they're both of the era, early to mid 2000s R&B/Hip hop style songs. It's almost like Charmbracelet was the blueprint for Mimi, which had better production, songs and vocals. Lullaby and Subtle Invitation have that old school R&B and neo-soul vibe she perfected for Mimi with live instruments, etc. It's like It's Like That was a better Boy, Shake It Off was a better The One, Fly Like A Bird was a better My Saving Grace.
