Oh wait, then you must think that's a stupid and invented word that I used just because it sounds cool. So you're denying that we, cisgender people, have privileges over non binary people who are killed, mistreated and discriminated every day all over the globe? You don't see the rigidity of gender in our society, the real implications of "two and only two" when it comes to sex and gender categories? You probably deny that we live in a society where heterosexuals have authority and privileges over cisgender females and over other sexual orientations and gender identities, where LGBTI people are discriminated and persecuted.
I suppose you stop reading because you're unable to see the connection between that term, the patriarchy and its implications, one of them the lack of sorority between women and the amount of daily microsexisms that we have to see or hear, like saying that "a woman is too old for wearing this or that".

Please respect Madonna, avoid sexist comments (89,545)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|

You can like or dislike Madonna, but saying that she based her career in creating scandal and in a sexualized image feels very reductive. She's done so many different music styles and she's very keen on working with artists who are vanguard. She never relies in her past, in her back catalogue. She always rearranges her greatest hits for each new tour, offering new twists on classic songs, what proves that she cherishes so much her craft (I wish Mariah would do that in her tours instead of giving us the same renditions of the same songs with almost the same arrangements). Many of you may not be familiar with her album "Ray Of Light" from 1998, but it's not only her best and more mature album in her entire career, but one of the best albums of the 90's (and in music history according to Rolling Stone magazine and many other critics). I think she's a little desperate for success right now because she worked with Maluma just because he is trendy and hugely known in the Latin music world, but how can a person who calls herself a feminist can team up with a guy whose songs are the paradigm of sexism and many of his lyrics with a violent content towards women?
Anyway I feel disappointed while reading some sexist and gerontophobic comments on this board, which simply reflect the sexism in our cisheteropatriarchal society we live in. Same as Wendy Williams who said about Madonna's BBMA performance that "she moves like an old woman". Does she think she's gonna stay forever young talking about her hot topics? By the way Wendy Williams should stick to her hot topics because everytime she talks about music it's embarrassing to watch (she called "Vision Of Love" the most stupid song ever, quote).
It seems like for some of you a woman must be polite, demure, "classy" (WTF), and if a woman is over her 50's you see "inappropriate" to wear certain clothes or do certain dance movements. Disgusting. Always criticising and telling how a woman should look or behave according to her age. Nothing but unadmited sexism. No one judges Iggy Pop for being shirtless 24/7. One thing is to criticise an oversexualized image or attitude (which is not Madonna's case right now) or the unnecesity of using sex as a reclame in the songs, and other very different thing is criticising that pattern for being "too old". I see that oversexualized image in other current artists like in Ariana Grande's "7 Rings", it's sad to see her looking like a porn actress in some shots. There's a difference between using sex and talking about sex with an attitude like Madonna did back in the day, grabbing her crotch like "this is mine", empowering other women to feel stronger, unapologetic, and allow themselves to express their sexuality but not for the eyes of men, which is the main difference I see with the sexyness projected by 99% of the current female singers. But I admit this point is very arguable. In my opinion, some people confuse female empowerment and use it as a façade for sexual objectification. Most pop music videos nowadays present girls in an almost denigrating way (for instance rappers surrounded by women treated as sexual objects, basically).
We shouldn't be wasting our time in comparing Mariah and Madonna, both are great examples of hard-working women who have succeeded in their own fields. The main difference between them is that Madonna is not a "vocalist", while Mariah was one of the best vocalists in music history, and still has one of the most unique and beautiful tones ever. And I would add that Mariah is one of the most underrated artists ever, often compared to Whitney and Celine and other divas but for me Mariah is the most complete, she's much more than a singer.
By the way I wish Mariah would care more about her visuals, her live presentations, her videos and the way she presents her work to the audience, because Madonna is impeccable at that and Mariah, now that she has lost a big part of her range and barely moves on stage, could be amazing to watch if she and her team would care more about this aspect.

Hope they release "Caution" as her next single (88,327)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
I hope they release "Caution" instead of "A No No". "Caution" has got an infectious melody and could be a radio hit. She needs to put out a good video and send the song not only to the US radio stations. I don't hear a new release from MC in Spanish radio stations since Touch My Body. I love the idea of releasing Caution and then Giving Me Life with a storyline as she did back in the day. They could use famous actors to appear in the video, as in ILT/WBT. For example Timothée Chalamet (the aclaimed actor of "Call Me By Your Name"), who recently said he loves "Giving Me Life" and called Mariah a "legend" in a French TV Program.
This album has so many songs and all of them could be released as singles. I don't care that much about the charts, but I would like her to put out more singles and videos from this amazing album. Just for the fans. Making a good video isn't that expensive so I hope they listen to us.

One Sweet Day - about AIDS epidemic (88,313)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
Does anyone know if Mariah did ever spoke about this song being about the AIDS epidemic? I do know that she dedicated the song to her friend and collaborator David Cole, who, as many people between the early 80's and the mid 90's, died of AIDS, among other causes because of governments' negligence and lack of responses (by the way, if you didn't, you must watch "The Normal Heart", which tells the story of the gay activist Larry Kramer).
All I could find in Wikipedia is this: "(...) After they began working on the song, Carey began to incorporate other lyrics into the chorus, trying to make the song relatable to the AIDS epidemic that was in full force in the mid-1990s." "Carey has stated that she wrote the song hoping that all her fans that have lost someone could relate to One Sweet Day and maybe help ease the pain of the loss. Carey described the song as "[the] whole idea of when you lose people that are close to you, it changes your life and changes our perspective".
But I wanted to know if there is an interview or whatever where Mariah specifically adresses the terrible AIDS epidemic. Thank you.

Re: After the Caution tour (88,281) (88,282)
by MC1989 from Spain

Well, Madonna did it with her Rebel Heart Tour, same as Barbra Streisand who released a whole live album apart from the Netflix special, and even Lady GaGa did release her tours on DVD for her fans. Bands like Pink Floyd, The Beatles, and legendary singers like David Bowie, Kate Bush, or Prince are re-releasing their whole catalogues in remastered vinyls, CD's with rarities and new booklets, and DVD's. When you're that iconic and have such a long career as Mariah, and most of your fan base is over 30-40 years old, she should care more about documenting her career.
We grew up in the era of CD's, VHS, DVD's, singles, maxi singles. And thank God there is a revival of vinyls. I wish someday they would release not only the Caution World Tour in DVD, but also these: - 1994 Saint John The Divine concert - live In Japan '96 - Butterfly tour in Tokyo '98 - Charmbracelet tour (in Manila, for instance) - The Beacon Center shows - Sweet Sweet Fantasy Tour - the Vegas residency But since her team doesn't care that much about this aspect, I would be content with bootleg versions.

The setlist - my suggestions (88,270)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
Glad you're back Andrew. Till The End Of Time would be so incredible. But I think she could handle better "The Wind", which is one of my favourites in her entire catalogue, and we know Mariah's voice - or at least her current voice - sounds better and effortless when she sings slow jazz songs.
I'm loving the new setlist, I just wish she wear jeans or at least not gowns while singing the up tempo songs so that she could move a little bit more. Walk that stage with a little more energy. But in general I'm very happy with this refreshing show.
Since Mariah is bringing back songs we thought we will never hear again "live", these are the songs I would love her to incorporate in future concerts:
- If It's Over (Please, it's a fan favourite.) - Vanishing (She praised this song so many times but she never sings it.) - Someday (If she doesn't like the arrangements from the studio version she could try to do something similar to the Unplugged version, with that soulful intro.) - Alone In Love - The Wind - Lullaby Of Birdland - Dreamlover Def Club Mix (Probably her best remix.) - Open Arms - I'm Free - Melt Away - Honey Def Club Mix (I like it much more than the original song.) - Sweetheart (Solo version with no JD.) - If We / Want You / Twister - Unforgettable (The acoustic mix is so amazing and underrated.) - Giving Me Life

Re: Rainbow / Glitter (87,766) (87,785)
by MC1989 from Spain

In my opinion, Rainbow is Mariah's worst album. The singles she released are great, and Petals, but the rest of the album is very poor compared to, for instance, Glitter, TEOM or Caution. Glitter is her most underrated album, but the fans know it's a very good album that unfortunately was eclipsed by the movie (bad, but not as bad as they say) that combines great up tempo songs with a clear 80's influence (Didn't Mean To Turn You On , All My Life), with powerful ballads in which she shows some of her best vocals (Lead The Way, Reflections, Never Too Far), and intimate and nostalgic vibes (Twister).

Don't contribute to wash one of the world's most terrible and cruel dictatorships. You were awarded with the GLAAD award two years ago. Just be consecuent. Thimothée Chalamet in "Giving Me Life" music video (87,650)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
One of my favourite actors and one of the world's most popular ones, Thimothée Chalamet, revealed he loves "Giving Me Life" and he even lip-synched and danced to the song on a TV program. If I was Mariah's manager, I would contact him immediately and ask him to appear in "Giving Me Life" video. He's super talented, young and very popular, so I would use his popularity and influence and release that song, which is a fan favourite, and Caution's most acclaimed song by the critics.

Beyonce didn't wear angel wings. I didn't see Beyonce standing there as a living Christmas Tree with Christmas lights over her dress and wings, without moving, like a statue. Take a look at Michael Jackson's "Will You Be There" video, look at the angel moment (minute 05:08) and how it's beautifully done, how it fits the song, and then watch Mariah with those tacky wings on singing the whole song with the wings on.

Re: Re: I feel ashamed (86,758) (86,783) (86,794)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |

I understand what you say. But this is not about hating or not, it's because I love her so much that I can't stand seeing her doing ridicule things like wearing those cheap wings with lights on them and all over her gown as if she was a living Christmas tree. And yes, she sounded very good, she displayed her unique and beautiful tone - I won't mention the usual lipped parts. She still has one of the most beautiful voices in the music industry.
What I think is that there's a big difference between being festive and being tasteless or tacky. Mariah can do so much better. I love Caution. I bought tickets to see her in 2 weeks. I'm a fan since the late 90's and I've seen every performance she's done since 1990. So it's not about criticising all she does.
It's as easy and simple as dressing her in a propper way and making better choices. She's not singing at a Victoria Secret fashion show, she's performing Hark The Herald Angels Sing. It doesn't fit. It's unapropiate, like singing O Holy Night in a bikini and a scarf on. It cheapens her image. What's the next thing? Sing "Miss You Most" dressed in a gingerbread man costume? Why not sing "AIWFCIY" with reindeer horns on her head? Or maybe sing "Little Snowman" dressed as a real snowman, with a carrot as a nose. If this is the "extravaganza" she's planning for next year's Merry Christmas anniversary, I don't want to be there to watch. I'm already scared lol.
I hope that if there is any chance for her to win the Songwriter's Hall of Fame or a Grammy nomination doesn't get ruined because of these bad choices, because, unfortunately, image counts a lot, and even more when it comes to her, after the NYE disaster.
As Andrew said, she's doing the exact same show from last year. The same little girl dancing to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, the same courtin falling down, the same setlist. It's ok to me, because this is my first time seeing her, but people who already went to the Christmas shows will pay for exactly the same.
I think her team could have created a great Christmas - themed show, even with a storyline or something, reflecting the childhood nostalgia and the celebration of Mariah Freaking Carey at Christmas time. They could have created a big structured production, featuring a big orchestra, new song arrangements, trapeze artists during a certain song, different lightings during the show, combining full light for the festive moments and create an intimate and epic acapella moment with "God Rest Ye Merry Yentlemen" just with a faint zenith lighting. They could've used candles on the stage a la Queen's "Who wants to live forever" video, some entreacts with classical music, and different sets for each part of the show. The decoration could mix the pagan and Christian vibes of Christmas, like in Annie Lennox's God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen video. Less "it's festive dahlings" and more creativity from her team.
But they're a bit lazy, I guess. So they're bringing the same show, with a new pair of tasteless wings.

I feel ashamed (86,758)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
First of all, she sounds great in her first Christmas show. Vocals on point. This being said, if Mariah wants to be taken seriously she should burn those horrible carnival wings and the even more terrible and awful Halloween costume she wears in AIWFCIY, the "take a look at my vagina" moment. What in hell was she thinking with those wings on? She looked ridiculous. The most tacky thing I've seen in a long time. Maybe it was a joke and I didn't get it. Really, this is scary. She really has no sense of ridicule. It's like if her team don't want her to succeed. Is Stella back or what? They didn't even change the song list. All the outfits look so tacky. Even the red one looks like a robe to walk around the house. I just don't get it, don't understand it. I love drag queens, I'm gay and I enjoy that way of art. But I think people are not going to the concerts to see a cheap drag show. Ir you're going to go that way, learn from RuPaul Drags Race. And if you want to put on a festive extravaganza show, with costumes etc, study Cher's extravaganza shows, and damn, hire the correct people.

Re: Why 8th Grade? Butterfly marries TEOM (86,640) (86,651)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
Absolutely, Andrew. But like all, it just comes down to a matter of taste. I supose it's also due to the fact that TEOM set the bar very high for me. E=MC2 is a good album overall, but I always skip some songs. It has the annoying "ya know this is" line from JD in many songs, as well as some disturbing rappers lol -the T Pain part with the vocoder ruins "Migrate", as well as the rappers' parts in "Side Effects" that make the song sound a bit noisy to me. "I Stay In Love" and "Bye Bye" - though I like them - sound too similar to WBT (I know "With You" sounds familiar too). And "O.O.C." is one of MC's worst songs in my personal opinion. To me E=MC2 has some good tracks like "I'm That Chick" (bravo for the Off The Wall sampler), "Touch My Body", "I Wish You Well" or "For The Record" - though some verses are very cliché. I learn to appreciate "Cruise Control" after all these years. I remember you referencing some verse of this song a few months ago.
With "Caution" I find myself listening to the whole album without skipping any song. The album emphasises the tone and the mood, it creates an intimate and warm atmosphera. I think, though Mariah continued in the R&B and hip hop - influenced line that many fans like me wanted her to cross, or to abandon for a while, and go more pop, or soul, or jazz; she managed to stay safe but sounding current by experimenting a bit more. I think she explored sounds she rarely does - that strong base throughout the end in "8th Grade", with that haunting groove matching the harmonic whistles-; the kinda misteryous atmosphera in GTFO, with its simplicity; "Giving Me Life" is a rare and great one, "One Mo'Gen", "Portrait", the catchy "Caution". I don't get bored at all, I immerse myself into the music ambient.
Apart from that, the 'bridge' in "Portrait" reminds me so much of "Twister". It's a nice blend between "Petals" and "Twister". I love the violins section at the end of the song. I wish they had use them during the song too, joining the piano chords.
