Celine, Mariah and lip synching (106,998)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
Celine still has a privileged voice, a unique, distinctive timbre, just like Mariah. The huge difference between the two is discipline. While Celine has been committed to caring for and maintaining her instrument and there are many videos and interviews over the last few years in which she claims to continue taking singing lessons and doing vocal exercises (which has not prevented the inevitable deterioration caused by age and her illness), Mariah has been committed for decades to using pre-recorded vocals and her vocal condition has plummeted since 2020 until today, where it is a real shame to see her in Las Vegas, where 95 percent of her show is pure playback. I am struck by the absence of any hint of expressiveness in her face due to the cosmetic infiltrations or retouching she has undergone since 2022. Up until the Caution tour (where she was still able to showcase glorious little vocal moments), Mariah was always known for being tremendously expressive and making faces and hand movements while singing live, especially during the more difficult parts of her songs; which, since the late 90s, made it extremely easy to detect when she was putting a pre-record into a climax because her facial expressiveness would totally change, her eyebrows would relax, her muscle tension would relax and she would look like she was smiling just when it was her turn to do the Olympic acrobatics. We all know that Mariah is not a good actress and has never been able to do a good lip-sync.
Right now it is a paradox that the less effort and effort Mariah puts in, the more believable her playback is in the eyes of non-fans, of the general public, since there is hardly any expressiveness in her face not only during the climax but during an entire song. Zero vocal effort, zero effort in movement and choreography. Just getting paid to look like a Barbie. At least Celine is able to convey a believable story, and mind you, unpopular opinion: although I get goosebumps every time I see her video singing Hymne a L'amour in the Eiffel Tower, as a fan who has been watching her sing for decades just like Mariah, I know perfectly well that her performance was 100% pre-recorded, with facial and body simulation and almost perfect playback. But she managed to put on an unforgettable show and return to the public eye and to music in style. Mariah, meanwhile, continues to make these poor performances in Las Vegas. I wish she would at least release some new studio music, since her forte, unlike Celine's, is songwriting and creating good songs written by herself.

Mariah Carey - Selfish (105,402)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
I can't stand Justin Timberlake, but since I've heard this song recreating Mariah's voice with artificial intelligence I find it sublime and it makes me want to listen to new Mariah music more than ever. This version with Mariah's voice has a lot of views on YouTube and it's becoming very popular. At the same time, it's scary what artificial intelligences are able to emulate and recreate. In any case, after a great album like Caution, more than 5 years ago, all I want is new music from Mariah. I don't want to see her overexposed on the net or in videos lip-syncing her most difficult songs, dressed like a doll and stiff on stage in Las Vegas. That Mariah for whoever buys it. I want the Mariah who brings us hours of work in a studio, with a new melody, a new lyric, a new hit to add to her unparalleled repertoire.

My All live in Sydney, second night (105,332)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
I have just listened to this gem. This is the kind of rarities and material that we die-hard fans want her to include on her reissues. The Butterrly Tour has some of her biggest live gems of her career. The little audio clip circulating on YouTube of "Vanishing", sung impromptu during the Butterfly tour is simply incredible. One of her best and most moving songs, by the way. The emotion that Mariah gives off in her phrasing, in her enunciation, in the way she sings. She was really interpreting the lyrics of the song.
During this tour his voice began to suffer noticeably, probably due to lack of technique and the bad habits often mentioned in this forum. And these live shows perfectly capture that vital moment that was so important to her. She still had a very privileged voice, a richness of textures and nuances like few mainstream singers had back then and to this day, I dare say. Agility combined with emotion. Which is what most current singers lack, emotion. I prefer a thousand times something that is not one hundred percent correct and perfect but that goes through you and makes you feel, which is what music is for, and not something millimetrically calculated and studied, neat and correct but lacking in emotion.
The Butterfly era represents a Mariah more alive than ever at a crucial point not only in her career but also at a vital moment of complete change. She was going to therapy, taking acting classes as she describes in her autobiography, renting a flat in New York where she spent time alone without a permanent glam squad. In short, gaining her independence, venturing out to meet new people, throwing herself into love affairs (Derek Jeter) and receptive to change; showing us her own change, her own emergence, after years of feeling controlled and corseted. All these changes in her personal life, in that very specific moment of life that she was going through in 96-97, decisive but ephemeral at the same time, are captured in Butterfly. It's normal that Mariah still feels that this album is her most personal and her favourite. I think at that time she was very connected to the world, to her own experience and that crucial moment of having to define a sound or a style of her own, knowing that she was going to be judged and observed more than ever after her divorce with the great music mogul at that time.
P.S. The only thing that makes me a bit angry about this wonderful "My All" - just like the one she performed in Perth, whose video has been on YouTube since last year and is another gem - is that the first chorus is a playback, because that airy, almost whispered voice of the first chorus is tremendously difficult to do live and with the acoustics of a big concert. But she could have modified it and done it differently. In any case, My All's performances during this time are magical.

We need an uptempo song (104,671)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
I wish Mariah give us new music in 2024. Although I loved Caution and I think It's one of her best albums (definitely it's in my top 5 favourites, with Daydream, Butterfly, the debut and TEOM), I think she need an uptempo more pop driven song. Something cheerful, with a simple structure, and not too much layering which we know Mariah is keen at, but I think sometimes less is more. I miss a good big catchy song with a real distinctive chorus, a la Dreamlover, Fantasy, Honey, Heartbreaker, even Obsessed, but a little more uptempo. Something with summer vibes. Just wishing.

Maybe the extreme stiffness is due to a recent lipposuction and a recent face lift? I don't know. Maybe she's recovering from recent surgeries. Because even though since 2010 her stage performances became very low energy in terms of movements and dancing, she was never this stiff. Though I'm enjoying some iconic moments from these Christmas shows, I share your thoughts about her recent awkward stiffness and lack of face expresion. I also feel good about her success with these shows, from the videos I've seen, people are enjoying them a lot and she's singing in front of big audiences again.

It isn't the lip-syncing that bothers me about the Billboard performance or the Christmas shows. You would have to be delusional with a capital Terna not to have expected there to be lipsync. And, having a PhD in Mariah Carey Lip-Sync, I was quite impressed as I had to replay certain parts to really understand if they were lip-sync or not. (They were.) But the songs sound okay from what I have watched and if people are having a ball in the auditoria then good for them.
What's truly puzzling at best (and truly worrisome at worst) is Mariah's rigidity. She rarely moves. More's the point: she rarely moves to an almost inhuman degree. It was even so on the Jennifer Hudson show. I neither see nor know of *any* artist who is so frozen in expression and in movement. I don't even know of any *person* in real life who behaves so. Does anyone? It's really weird, you guys. Something is not right, here. In fact, I would go so far as to say: something is very wrong here.
One of the things I loved that Mariah lost was her command of the stage and ability to entertain. She would run up and down the bloody thing, punch the invisible ghosts, slap them in the face many times when going for big notes, activate the garage doors by pressing the secret button in her ear, spin around, laugh, dance, point to people and tell them she sees them up there in the cheap seats, get excited when she can read some of the signs (do people still do signs?) and so on. Where did this go? And why?
I don't think anyone is asking for 90s vocals. But I think they're sure as shit asking for 90s performances. And quite rightly so. They were bloody good fun.

Old school MC fans from the 90's know a lip synced performance when we see one and it was definitely prerecorded which is the norm for her these days. Her nerves along with the inconsistency of her voice has has caused her to lean on prerecorded vocal tracks. I just want more movement from her if she's going lip sync.

Emotionless: Mariah's face is totally stiff (104,093)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
The Virgin Mary kinda outfit is iconic, the religious imaginary always works (Madonna, Beyoncé etc and now Mariah is using it too), it looks beautiful on her. That being said, it's sad to watch her lipping 99% of the show. It's not that she's lipping the climaxes as she used to do, now she's lipping 99% of each song. She's stiff as a rock. She's unable to convey any emotion at all after the face surgery. I don't understand the need of exposing herself like this. If she's unable to sing, why go on tour? It's not that she doesn't dance, she doesn't sing either and she doesn't even try to pretend to be singing live. The only thing she does is stand there looking beautiful and stiff. I Hope she's ok but obviously she's not. I love you Mariah no matter what I will always support your music, your catalogue is untouchable and unmatchable, and so is your legacy, but please stop draggin' it. Don't go on tour. You have been blessing us for decades now. Focus on writing another book, songs or poetry, or on other projects less stressing or demanding, and only go out the and sing when you're really ready and prepared for it.

Though I always liked the song, and the stunningly beautiful young and carefree Curlyriah in the video, it was never one of my favourite tracks, but It sure grew on me over the years. I love the sample from The Emotions' Blind Alley, combined with Mariah's voice at her peak, and the single cover which I still have and still is one of my favourite pictures from her. The Def Club Mix was and still is one of her best remixes in my opinion. I remember hearing the song in the radio here in Spain even until the early 00's.

The very first tape I bought that wasn't r&b or pop. Well, I didn't buy it, Columbia House gave it to me along with 9 others for 1¢. The point is it was my beginning into white singer/songwriters I would've never known about because I lived in an urban monolith. I bought it for Nothing Compares 2U but in actuality my favorite song from 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got' is "This Is The Last Day of Our Acquaintance". If not for her, I wouldn't have paid any attention to Jewel, Paula Cole or Sarah McLachlan.

One of the greatest voices ever. One of my biggest musical references. I highly recommend her album Universal Mother, it's pure perfection from start to finish. Let's not be too hard on her, and still remember that she might be doing the best she can with what's left of her ability right now, which from the clips we saw is not much. Her voice issues are serious seeing as how many times she kept sipping tea and still it wasn't enough. At this point, her options are slim – it's voice therapy or the much dreaded surgery. Being in her shoes must be very scary as we all know what happened to Bonnie Tyler's voice and Julie Andrews more recently. I know it scares Mariah to think of surgery and putting her gift, career and future all on the line. What I want to see Mariah do is a lifestyle change and to seek professional help. Build your voice from the ground back up again with a voice therapist and a vocal coach, those exercises really do work. Find out what you've been doing wrong and correct that technique. You'll be surprised how much of her vocal problems are superficial.
