With You > TD > GTFO (85,107)
by Edward from USA

I'm impressed how everything is falling into place with this era. Everything is on point so far. I didn't love "The Distance" from first listen, but it has grown on me. It's definitely radio friendly, current and catchy, so let's see what happens. I still can't get "With You" out of my head. I haven't had that experience with a Mariah song in years. I'm just worried that with so many shots of Remy, I have become an alcoholic, I can't help it, Mariah is a bad influence. It's brilliant she's releasing a new album so closed to the holidays so it could actually run on the Christmas buzz she always generates, it's genius. I would take a great 10-track album over an album ruined by some rotten apples any day. Back to listen to "With You".

I agree. I guess they were tasting the waters with the first two tracks, but the next single should be a banger with a big name featured. We must be prepared for the possibility of a great abum even if it's not commercially successful, I could live with that. My only expectation now is great muic.

Heart Attack (84,916)
by Edward from USA

I hope they keep the rest of the album hidden in a vault somewhere. If they start "leaking" snippets, I won't listen to them. Since Mariah might not release another album in another 5 years or so, I want to experience the album like back in the day. I'll pre-order on Amazon, and wait for the physical CD to arrive, get a bottle of wine, listen to it. I want to have that "Butterfly" CD unwrapping experience one last time since I haven't been as excited about a Mariah album in a long long time.

Caution (84,897)
by Edward from USA

Well, the time has almost come. I love the title, very unpredictable, enticing and intriguing. I guess we're going to face lot of curse words and unapologetic moments in the songs. I'm actually excited. Just hoping Rock and Roe are not featured in any the songs. She can later produce their very own "Children of The Corn" album for them.

So sad (84,863)
by Edward from USA

Andrew, I think you owe Anthony an apology, but I definitely know you won't give it to him. It's sad because you're pretty capable of defending yourself against anybody here without hitting below the belt. You've taken personal information Anthony had given you in confidence and used it against him on a public messageboard for the sole purpose of humiliating him, it was disgusting. Do you think that after that post anybody here would be open to tell you anything over the phone? Yes, I know you don't give two [censored] about it. I've always thought you were a good person, but I don't think good people do shit like that. A*holes do.

Andrew, you must be tripolar. Exactly what I experienced. It was something not expected from Mariah visually, and the song, given the time, actually gets into one's head. Lol.

I guess you should know by now I'm far from being an apologist for her. Of course the choreography was set up that way to make sense of her just standing there, and it did work. As much as I don't like her constant lipping and stiff performances, I don't suffer anymore expecting any different because she doesn't seem to care, and if she doesn't care, why should I? If there's someone getting an ulcer for that, it should be her not me. And yes, the performance was visually stunning, emphasis on visually. I won't regurgitate what's been said about her lipping on this particular performance, that would be stating the obvious.

Andrew, if you noticed, I focused on the visual aspect of the performance, I didn't comment on the voice much because you and many others have already said what was obvious to her fans. I was tired of seeing Mariah perform with cheap productions, but this time it was something pleasing to the eye, and that's a fact.

AMAs (84,771)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
AMA's performance was visually stunning. Yes, she was just standing there, but the choreography called for it, so it was refreshing to see real dancers emerged the way they did. Most people seem to think she actually sang live, but I guess everything has been said about it already, at least she's lipping convincingly, because she was awful at that. I just like the fact that we got something different from Mariah, not her usual cheap choreography without meaning. When I saw Celine singing "Her Heart Would Go On" at the Billboard Music Awards, I was amazed and hoped for Mariah to one day visually get to that kind of quality, and she actually did. So, let's give her some credit for that. If the voice is not there as much, I think she should compensate at least with something else, and since she can't dance even if her life depended on it, great visuals should be a part of her performances.

Re: Music biz today (84,591) (84,594)

Things are definitely different now. People can put together a playlist on YouTube and listen to their favorites for free. When you had to wait for TRL to watch videos, now they're at the click of a mouse, so views are really important. It's clearly a different scene these days. The amount of social media followers are not directly proportional to album or singles sales, it's very unpredictable. If you're very popular now, and disappear for more than a year, there's no guarantee you'll be as successful as you were before that, because you would be easily replaced. It's like, taking breaks or long breaks don't create excitement or expectation anymore, with so many options shooting from all directions, you're bound to be forgotten if you take a break. It's really sad. It's also sad the fact that no matter how great the music is, we'll always judge Mariah by the amount she sells when it's clearly unfair. I think we got used to her being a selling machine, but the scene is clearly different now.

I need help (84,575)
by Edward from USA

I can't seem to shake the lyrics "it was waaaaar..." and "he said, Yooooo..." out of my head. She harmonizes those lyrics so beautifully, I can't. They sound so pleasing to the ear. I actually think that given the right push, Mariah might have a slow burner under her skirt with this one. "GTFO" and "With You" sound great when played one after the other.

With You or Without You (84,389)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
"With You" is a nice filler song, that's about it. It definitely seems Mariah has lost her muse though. 90's Mariah seemed to have more depth and mature lyrics than this Mariah. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button comes to mind, Mariah when young seemed to have an old soul and her music reflected that, but now that she's older, her soul has gotten more juvenile, so weird. I like "With You", but single material It. Is. Not. What's next with her aggressive lyrics, a future Christmas song called "Merry Effing Christmas"? After all Virgin Mary had to give birth to Jesus, maybe she cursed while going through labor like some women do out of pain, who knows. I'm still looking forward to the new album though.

It's hard, but... (84,275)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
I know we all have this expectation that Mariah would pull a monster hit out of her weave just like that, but that's not the case without the fan-base she used to have to support her. It's not impossible, just very unlikely. We all know "Loverboy" was just a rushed mess that didn't deserve to even be played, yet it made it to #2, that was the power of the lambs buying multiple singles, calling to request, it was actually the most requested song that year. We're just three cats now, we alone don't have that power anymore. Unless she releases a song that the GP likes, we won't have a hit. But, do we so desperately want a hit or a great song? We used to have both, but I would be happy with the latter. That feeling of having Mariah hitting #1 left and right was a high we got so used to that we can't seem to let it go. It's time to just enjoy the music as-is, if you so like, or just stop listening. I don't care much about the charts anymore, I just hope Mariah doesn't recycle the same sound again. If the music is good, that's what matters at this point. "Almost Home" was a flop commercially, but it was a great song, it didn't sound rushed or half-cooked, that's what I'm expecting from her, quality more than anything. So far I like the snippet.

Re: Worst Mariah song - in your mind (84,183) (84,184)

"Sprung" is to TEOM as "Crapfinity" is to #1's, a garbage track ruining the ending of an already great album for some countries. I sometimes wonder how this woman could create a ringtone so great like "Once In A Lifetime" and then, with the help of 20 people and a hot artist, creates a masterpiece called "Why You Mad".

Re: MC15 meaning (84,071) (84,077)
by Edward from USA

Her vocals were heavily doctored on MIAM, but E=MC2 was one of those albums in which Mariah actually sounded great and confident, she even had some live clips laying her vocals in the studio, something Mariah rarely does. She was in a good place vocally back then. At that point she didn't have anything to prove anymore, she just needed to deliver a good fun album, and she did. I think it was the last time Mariah had a great video.

At this time, by Mariah standards, anything resembling Charmbracelet, vocally and lyrically, would be a masterpiece. Her lyrics were still poetic and meaningful back then. Licia, you owe me 50 bucks, this post isn't a freebie, stop giggling.

Re: iHeart set (83,959) (83,968)
by Edward from USA

Some people tend to think Mariah would, out of the blue, pull her 90's voice back and wow us all, but that's never going to happen. I think the damage is done. I still think she could be consistent with what's left though. The iHeart set was stiff but decent overall. She finally walked a few steps without help, that's improvement right there, she should be given the "Heel Of Steel Award" for that. Once she masters her corset-voice, she would be on point, but it takes time. It's not easy singing with all your vital organs canned into a corset without sounding like a deflating balloon, the woman must've been suffering just to entertain us, credit where credit is due. I can't wait for new single to be released. I have a feeling the new single will be featuring a huge star of the moment to give Mariah the push she needs. Finger crossed.

Re: Voice question (83,910) (83,913)

That technique is called Nodule-Voice, in which Mariah vibrates her nodules pushing her polyps upward producing that breathy haunting-GTFO sound. She also uses that technique on Migrate, that's why it should've been a single.

You really fell for that? As soon as you read the nonsense "The video totally echoes the song. It's viby, the colors and contrast really echo the layers in her voice," you should've known better. If Mariah had a video in which she's sitting on a toilet, making faces and frowning, he would find a way to say how her frowning echoes the sentiment of whatever song she's trying to push out of her heart. Ce garçon est épique.
