Caution next singles (86,580)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
Caution is doing well in the Asian market, in the US and in Australia, among other countries. I like all the songs on the album except Stay Long Love You. Sounds like a filler.
Everybody seems to enjoy "A No No", but I don't like the melody, and it surprises me that the lyrics were written by 9 people. I don't like Lil' Kim nor Cardi B, but I'm ok with the upcoming remix, though I think "Caution", "Giving Me Life" and "8th Grade" - with those harmonic wistles and that beat towards the end - should be released as singles, with a different type of video for each. A No No remix could attract some younger fans, but it won't bring anything new to me.
I hope Mariah or her team listen to the fans and release a good video for "Giving Me Life", as long as it's a fan favourite, and its sound and length are perfect for a mini movie kind of video. Then, she could release a radio edit version - although the best part of the song comes with that guitar riff and Mariah's whistles notes at the end.
I wish MC doesn't stop promoting Caution on behalf of her AIWFCIY upcoming tour. I'm fed up with the "Queen Of Christmas" thing, she's much more than that, and she has just released a very good album with great reviews from the critic and the media, even here in Spain, some of the most important newspapers like El País are writting about her comeback in a very good way.
I think this is the right moment for releasing new singles with new videos. If she waits until January, AIWFCIY will eclipse her new material and she'll still be regarded as a Christmas act. I would love AIWFCIY becomes her 19th number one in the US, but I don't want her to be regarded as a one hit wonder (I know that hits like Hero, Without You and My All are worldwide known, but at least here in Spain, as in many countries, the only song that gets a lot of radio airplay every year is AIWFCIY).

I listened to the album today. Giving Me Life is the best song on the album, and one of MC's best songs ever. This song really needs to be released with a strong video and a storyline.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (86,375)
by MC1989 from Spain

I think this is the definitive version of the song. As much as I love Nat King Cole's version and Annie Lennox's (and her whole album "A Christmas Cornucopia"), Mariah's recording captures the angelic 1994 tone and some of her best vocals, and her ability for creating an unique sound. I played it yesterday to my father - who, back in the 90's used to critized some of Mariah's vocal acrobatics for not being able to transmite enough - and he asked me: "Is she doing all the background vocals? I admit she's a genius at harmonizing and creating melodies." I almost cried lol. As Andrew said the other day, O Holy Night is the definitive version of the song. To me, GRYMG is also the definitive cover. I wished she had done more songs in this style, not only for a Christmas song.

Glitter's success on iTunes Album Chart (85,919)

Glitter is now #1 in Philipines #1 Vietnam #1 Thailand #2 Malasya #4 Brazil #5 Indonesia #6 Taiwan #8 United States # 15 United Kingdom # 20 Italy This is [censored] amazing. Justice for Glitter, one of MC's best works. The movie is bad, the album is great. P.S: "Want You" is one of Mariah's most underrated songs.

I don't know what do her managers expect, but without any promotion it's very difficult to sell all the tickets for a big stadium like Wizink Center in Madrid. Anyway, I would like to meet some fans too before or after the concert.

Mariah Carey in Madrid (85,763)
by MC1989 from Spain

I will go to Mariah's concert in Madrid on December 17. Who else here is coming? By the way, I wonder how much is she selling. In Madrid there are still tickets to purchase, 67,50€. The expensive ones are sold. But I don't see any promotion, no TV/radio adverts and the concert is in one month.

I must admit... (84,757)
by MC1989 from Spain

That "With You" has grown a lot in me, until a point where the melody is stuck in my head. Since the epic playback at the AMAs - I liked the presentation though - I've been listening to "With You" a few times per day. Though I preferred GTFO as the first promoted single, I'm so happy Mariah is back with new songs that I like. I will buy the album as soon as it comes. I will not comment anything about her playbacks or the state of her voice until I hear her voice live again, because I'm really concerned. I paid around € 140 to go and see her Christmas show in Madrid in December. I'm so excited. This is a dream come true. But I'm also worried about how she is going to sound. It's the first time she comes to Spain to do a concert since Rainbow. There will be a lot of expectation, so she must bring the 2014-15 Beacon shows voice back or she will be killed by the press and the media.

GTFO was much better than With You (84,370)
by MC1989 from Spain

I don't like this choice. I feel like it's not something new. It's like a mixture between We Belong Together and The Art Of Letting Go. It's not that I don't like the song, but after GTFO - which I love - I expected something different, not another slow jam with fingers clapping.

Re: GTFO on the charts? (83,987) (83,988)
by MC1989 from Spain

|
|
Seriously. I don't get the obsession for the charts. I care about the music, about good songs, about how a song can make me feel. I love GTFO, I don't care about if it charts well or not. It is a success since Mariah brought something most fans liked, and it's a song which is out of her r&b/rap comfort zone. Most songs that reach the top 10 or a number one are very poor, commercial and worth forgetting. Many of MC's greatest songs didn't even charted. I don't care anymore for the "19th" number one or the commercial success as long as the songs are worth listening and bring some feelings, some vibe, some emotion.

I liked some parts of her live performance. It's Like That sounded confident, with attitude. I liked Always Be My Baby and We Belong Together as well. The rest is very poor, in my opinion. Restrained vocals and it was obvious she could've done better, she didn't move, neither walk through the stage. She needs to go to a vocal coach. She still has a lot of potential and can give strong vocals, but she relies on her prerecorded and back up tracks instead of rearranging her songs in order to sing them 100% live.

Congratulations Mariah. I love the song. My boyfriend, who's very harsh on Mariah, loves GTFO too. It's a new sound for her. I love the arrangements. It has a retro vibe but yet sounds current. No rappers, new arrangements, no "verse - chorus - verse - chorus - bridge - chorus" kinda song. Good effort, Mariah. I usually don't like Mariah overusing the whisper tone but it fits with the hypnotic and smooth mood of the song. I don't enjoy the video that much, although I like that it makes you feel like a voyeur ha ha. I like the lightening and she looks stunning but I don't like her sexualized image. She doesn't need that, we all know she's sexy but I wish she would drop that a little bit. What I enjoy the most is that this is new material. It fits her current voice, and if she brings a whole new album this could mean she would stop singing Vision of Love and Hero again and again. I'm tired of the Vegas residency and tired of seeing her perform the same f*cking songs instead of singing others from her huge catalogue. We all fell in love with 90's Mariah. No current artist could ever compare to the first, let's say 15 years of her career. After TEOM her creativity, voice and image started to get worse. She made some good tracks and she gave some good performances in this last decade, but we all felt she needed to explore new music styles; no more We Belong Together sound (DFAU, Bye Bye, Angels Cry...), no more rappers, no more r&b. She's too young to rely on her greatest hits, and I'm glad she's back with new music. At least GTFO is out of her comfort zone. It hasn't got a lot of layering and backing vocals which sometimes can annoy me. Sometimes less is more. This being said, I love to listen to GTFO at home, it has an intimate sexy and smoothy sound, but it's not a song to perform live. It wouldn't sound good. I don't care about if she promote this live or not, as long as she brings new material and singles like this. By the way I hate that she's working again with JD. As Andrew said a long time ago, yes, "we all know this is is". I hope the rappers featured on this album don't annoy me that much.

Favourite video (80,722)

Fantasy (with no ODB). I love this song. Definitely one of Mariah's greatest songs. I wish she would create melodies like this nowadays (forget the rappers, we need an uptempo song please). That voice, that infectious melody, that rhythm, those jeans. She was defining part of the 90's sound. Everything from Daydream gives me a summer kinda feeling. I also love Always Be My Baby. Simple and iconic videos without the desperate need of looking sexy all the time. 1. Fantasy 2. Always Be My Baby 3. Breakdown 4. I Still Believe / Pure Imagination 5. Dreamlover (Simply lovely. Summer feeling again. Ah, the youth.) 4. The Roof 5. Butterfly (Except some excesive smiling towards the end plus the moment when she feeds the horse with carrots.) 6. Some parts of Shake It Off (Visually, in terms of effects it's one of her best.) 7. Bringin' on the heartbreak 8. Through The Rain 9. Boy (Not a big fan of the song though.) 10. Honey or Heartbreaker

"Mariah Carey and Friends" (78,690)
by MC1989 from Spain

If Mariah and Stella are still going to milk MC's back catalogue, at least bring something interesting to the fans. What about releasing a double album called "Mariah Carey and friends" featuring her best duets and collabos from 1990 until now? With a complete booklet a la "#1To Infinity" and Mariah sharing her memories. Mariah could organise a big party in Las Vegas for its release, with champagne everywhere lol and invite Patti LaBelle, Da Brat, JD, Bieber, Celine Dion, Beyonce and Jay Z, Britney Spears... and the press will cover the event, and it would show the world Mariah is still respected by some. A possible tracklist could include: - I'll Be There, feat. Trey Lorenz - Everything Fades Away, feat. Will Downing - Endless Love, with Luther Vandross - Fantasy remix, feat. O.D.B. - One Sweet Day, with Boyz II Men - Always Be My Baby 'Mr.Dupri Mix', feat Xscape, JD and Da Brat - Always Be My Baby reggae mix feat. Lil' Vicious - Honey Remix, feat. Puff Daddy, Mase and The Lox - The Beautiful Ones, with Dru Hill - Breakdown, feat. Bone Thugsn Harmony - My All/Stay Awhile feat. Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz - When You Believe, with Whitney Houston - Got To Be Real, with Patti LaBelle - I Still Believe/Pure Imagination, feat. Damizza and Krayzie Bone - Chain Of Fools, with Aretha Franklin - Hoplessly Devoted To You, with Olivia Newton John - I Still Believe 'Stevie J. Remix', feat. Mocha and Amil - Sweetheart, with Jermaine Dupri - Whenever You Call, with Brian McNight - Heartbreaker, feat. Jay Z - How Much, with Usher - Against All Odds, with Westlife - Baby Love/ Stop In The Name Of Love, with Diana Ross - Hero, with Luciano Pavarotti - Crybaby, feat. Snoop Dogg - Thank God I Found You/Make It Last, with Joe - Heartbreaker remix, feat. Missy Elliot and Da Brat - Want You, with Eric Benet - If We, feat. Ja Rule (I Don't Know Her version) - Loverboy, feat. Cameo - Boy I Need You, feat. Cam Ron - You Got Me, feat. Jay Z - Got A Thing 4 You, with Da Brat and Elephant Man - I Know What You Want, with Busta Rhymes - My Love, with The Dream - Say Somethin', feat. Pharrell Williams - To The Floor, feat. Nelly - With You I'm Born Again, with John Legend - Cruise Control, with Damian Marley - When Do The Bells Ring For me, with Tony Bennet - Angels Cry, with Ne-Yo - Up Out My Face, feat. Nicki Minaj - Betcha Gon' Know, with R. Kelly - All I Want For Christmas Is You, with Justin Bieber - When Christmas Comes, with John Legend - Oh Come O Ye Faithfull, with Patricia Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You, with Michael Bublé - Beautiful, with Miguel - Delicated, feat. Nas - Christmas Time Is In The Air Again, with Kenny Edmonds "Babyface" - Can't Say No, with Rick Ross - Why You Mad? feat. Justin Bieber - Infamous, with Jussie Smollet - I Don't, feat. YG - Unforgettable, with French Montana Possible Bonus: What More Can I Give, Just Stand Up, If It's Over (co-written with Carole King lol), We're Not Making Love Anymore live with Michael Bolton (snippet), Head Over Heels with Allure, Yours with Justin Timberlake, Stay The Night (produced by Kanye West) lol, Bye Bye feat. Akon and Lil Wayne, Make It Look Good feat. Stevie Wonder's harmonica.

Re: Who would you pick (76,322) (76,324)
by MC1989 from Spain

Search her. She's really one of a kind. To me, she's like the female version of David Bowie. And no, no relation to the Bush family haha. There was a rumour that supposedly she's a tory (a supportive of the Conservative Party) but that would be the only connection between them in case it was true. I have a very eclectic taste in music so I was wondering if anybody else here listens to other genres and artists who are totally different from Mariah. Nice to see the answers. In my opinion, until 2008 -more or less -, Mariah kept this reserved image. During the 90's and the early 00's she hardly ever talked about her private life. We cared about what mattered: the music. Mariah used to be a very focused and hard working person so she made sure her career was based on her work as a singer and a songwriter. She preserved this mysterious image that I miss so much nowadays. That's another reason why I thought about Kate Bush as a polar opposite to Mariah. Kate is a musical genious who hardly ever gives interviews and she rarely shows up in public but she maintains that legendary status, and her influence on recorded music has been huge - it's difficult to image Tori Amos, Björk, and even Madonna without her. People go mad each time she appears in public. There are also people like Stevie Nicks or Sade who keep a mysterious aura and maybe it takes a long time for them to release an album but when they do it you feel it was worthwile waiting. Mariah's media exposure and her recent projects (cosmetic line, fragrances, drink line , reality show, etc.) have broken this idea of "music first". It's not just that the musical quality has gone downhill, but also the way she carries herself as a public figure has gotten worse (staged relationships, constant wardrobe malfunctions, more frequent bad performances). Nowadays pop music is more about the persona than the artistry. Most singers these days are unoriginal attention whores seemingly lacking any discernable talent. Mariah is very talented, but she has fallen into a fashion that she had critizised so much in the past.
