So true. My my mother has the "original" debut vinyl from 90, she bought it right after hearing the phenomenal "Vision of love". I didn't know she had her debut. But when I became a fan with Daydream, she told me she loved "Vision of love". She also loves Sade, I have my musical taste from her.

I think MC could have recorded the phone book for her debut album and been successful. Her voice was so amazing and so unheard of at the time. She truly is a once in a generation artist.

Yes, it may be only business. But I still believe he isn't the nice guy everyone thinks he is. I always liked the other Nysnc [sic] members more. Lol. One thing is sure Justin was always very clever in his entertainment business. I have a feeling that "Yours" won't be released soon. We'll see if Mariah surprises us.

Why would Justin record a song with Mariah if he wasn't interested in getting it released? It doesn't make any sense. The song was [not] included on Charmbracelet simply because his label didn't want to. I think they were thinking business.

There was a documentary about the nipplegate with Janet Jackson. And Justin didn't go well on the docu. That "Yours" with him as a duet wasn't released because he feared about his "good name" and career says it all. He's the real slim shady. Lol.

Yes, I can't stand Justin Timberlake. He always played the nice guy, but he really seems like a bad snake. So "Yours" without him is fine. "There for me" is a beautiful song. Should have been a bonus track on Glitter.

I agree with most of these tracks except I don't care to hear Justin Timberlake or want Mariah associating with him. He's a snake and has done some shady ish towards women. I can't stand people like him, a true culture vulture. There For Me has always been one of my favorites and I include it in my Glitter soundtrack playlist.

Her natural alto voice is shining through more when she speaks. Her voice reminds me of her 90s interviews. I think that a vocal coach or Mary Ann told her to limit her intake of alcohol this summer and see how your vocal range returns. It was evidence on most of Caution. I am anticipating that we will get more of her alto range with heavier tones and less belting on the new album.

Yes, Taylor Swift seems very relatable. I only know "Shake it off" and her debut country album. Lol I had friends from Texas, they told me to give the album a try when it came out. Back then I never thought Taylor Swift would be the biggest female pop star chartwise in 2023.

As much as I hate to say it, Taylor Swift's songs don't just chart one week and out the other, she has a massive fanbase. In some places they're camping outside Arenas six months in advance just to be closer to the stage. She's definitely had the Midas touch for quite sometime now. I don't know the lyrics to any of her songs. I tried listening to her last album but I didn't feel a connection. I wish her well though. Her relatable persona definitely helps her a lot. The woman is the biggest thing right now yet she doesn't acts as if she believes her own hype.

Yesterday I saw in the news that Dolly Parton is releasing a rock album. With the age of 77 I find it pretty cool. I think she has great humour. In the interview they asked from Country to Rock? And she said, because she's in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame so she had to do an album for the genre.

If it's true, that's tough stuff. In my heart I always hope the best, but I often get dissapointed by people. That's a reason I stay away from superficial ones. Down to earth people never hurt me. But with Bryan a lot of you never trusted him. I just thought Mariah was happy with him. It's really sad if they broke up. The "superlove". Mariah deserves a real partner who loves her the human. And of course her kids.

As always beautiful written Mara. You described it so well with the "auto pilot". I also think her inner sparkle is missing. Last year it was there and she was shining. Yes, maybe she's just tired. I hope she's okay. I also wondered that there are no new pics with Bryan. Of course it's private but usually they post pics during Thanksgiving and the Christmas season. We'll see. I hope she's ready for the concerts and can enjoy it with the lambily.

I have to agree with this Bradley. There is something missing this year or season I should say. She looks like she is going through the motions and is perhaps on "auto pilot". I hope she is ok. Her sparkle is a miss this year and I can feel it almost like the first year at the Beacon where she geared up singing Hero and she was separated from Nick. I wonder if her and Bryan took a break to see how things went and decided to officially end the relationship recently. I just hope she is ok. This is her time and she always has that sparkle in her eye and seeing her almost blank makes me sad. Maybe she is just tired of this and not in the mood this season. It happens to all of us. But as a day one 1990 fan, M always wears her heart on her sleeve and we can read her better than anyone else. We love you Mariah - go out there and have some amazing shows making amazing memories with your beautiful children by your side.

Absolutely. I think one reason why Taylor Swift is so big is because there's no real competition anymore. There's only Adele in that age group. Compared to the 80ies and 90ies the music biz is really boring and almost dead. I had to google who Saint Harison is and started a song, but I couldn't listen more than 30 seconds. Bill I have the same thought. The voice is strange and unpleasant to my ears. I will listen to Marvin Gaye's album "What's goin' on" tonight. Masterpiece. The rythmn of "Inner City Blues" always gets me, music used to be so good.

I think that only happens [once] in a lifetime. As much as I loved Whitney and like Celine, they couldn't quite get to me like Mariah did. While Whitney's voice was more powerful, Mariah's artistry was far superior and her voice more nuanced. Whitney would make any song presented to her sound as if she had written it. Mariah was more like a painter and decorative painter all in one. I don't remember anybody who could put together complicated background vocals like Mariah. Had social media been around back then, Mariah would've been twice bigger than Taylor [Swift.] I can't name a song by Taylor Swift, but the woman is a phenomenon.

Fantasy (104,003)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
| |
|
|
I think it suits the staus quo of Mariah's career that the song that might stand out as her legacy besides AIWFCIY is Fantasy, and how telling that is for what Mariah has become.
If I try to understand what is going on in Mariah World, is that she is now just a fantasy, and that is what she is selling us with new releases, concerts and "live" performances from her home. She has had a splendid career, nobody can take away her success, especially during the 90's, she will for ever be mentioned when people talk about the best singers in history. Nobody will deny that she had one of the biggest voices the world has gotten to know.
I don't think the general public really knows about the condition of Mariah's voice at the moment, and I don't think they care. The Lambily knows, and we are frustrated. But I think if we still want to enjoy the rest of her career, and I don't think she will retire anytime soon, we have to embrace the idea that she is now a fantasy, a relic of what once was. At her show it is Mariah who is singing, but the voice might be from years ago, and between all the pre-reccorded tracks, she somtimes sings a word or a sentence with her current voice. We just have to believe in her like a child believes in Santa Clause. Mariah is now both real and not real at the same time.
Mariah has become a fantasy you can chose to believe, and even if you don't believe, you can still enjoy the charade, because it induces positive feelings if you just go with the flow.
It's almost Christmas season, and I'm going to enjoy Mariah, her old music, new music, YouTube videos from her Christmas shows, really get into the Christmas and Mariah spirit, and just pretend that it's real, much like Christmas itself.

Mariah, please be ready (104,001)
by MusicfanJ from Germany

Again I absolutely agree with Andrew on the confidence topic. Mariah was confident during those years. One can watch all her great performances online. She was the queen of Pop and RnB and her performances were great and often outstanding. Yes, she was never an "entertainer" but I never needed a circus number from a singer. I loved her magic, sweet aura on stage. Even in 2003 during Charmbracelet tour, she was very confident. A real diva and even entertaining. (Piano performance like a Marilyn Monroe.) She had so much energy and a "having fun" vibe. Superstar power all over. Haha isn't there a rumour with the aliens who kidnapped the real Mariah in 96? But seriously, Mariah can be fantastic on stage. She has it all. The confidence thing is not the problem.

I don't understand from where this idea of Mariah being an "unconfident" performer still permeates? She was unrefined during the debut performances into Emotions perhaps, but 1993 - 2008 oozed confidence - granted: sometimes ebbing, sometimes flowing, but confident she was. It is only since Memoirs did Mariah have a personality transplant. I'm swaying to the idea that she was beamed up to the mothership and replaced with a somewhat imperfect and faulty replica.

First Cheech, then Chong, now the Chin (103,947)
by Andrew from the UK
| |
|
|
I put it to you:
Fact Parte the First:
Mariah has spent years silently, without ceremony, repositioning her head on her neck almost every time a camera is aimed in her direction. We know her head is not aligned correctly with the centre of the Earth because the other people in the photo, the buildings in the photo and Mariah's own body upon which the head sits in the photo, are all pointed in the same direction - that is to say, to the centre of the Earth. We know that Mariah does this because she has - or had - a much larger, fattier face than previously known, and. in doing said little-teapot-short-and-stout act, she is stretching the skin to reduce the fat effect. For Heaven forfend Mariah not look perfect all the live long day.
Fact Parte the Second:
Mariah's face has become noticeably thinner with less weight around the jawline and neck this year - at a much more appareent accelerated rate than her body (which is still rather curvy).
Fact Parte the Third:
Mariah does a little hand wave with the bridge of her hand pressed against her chin. Those of us who have a grip on reality will have seen over the years tha Mariah does not start new body movements unless they are covering something up she does not want people to see.
Please the court, I wish to read the charges:
Mariah Carey has had more cosmetic surgery - Mariah Carey has had a chin lift.
What say you?

Can anyone tell me if there is any hidden meaning behind Mariah's "chin wave". I don't think it's a new thing but I have seen about 5 random videos recently in which Mariah puts the back of her hand underneath her chin and waves her fingers. I feel like I've seen it lots but have only just thought about how strange it seems. It's almost like it is a code for those in the know and I'm clearly not in the know.

You're right, she seemed often unhappy/unsecure during that time. "Looking in" says it all. But she also had a magic aura which I loved. The concert in NY was phenomenal. Anyway the pressure of being on top of the music throne, the envy of many while she broke record after record with the sales and number ones. The controlling Tommy. Maybe there are a lot of bad memories, I'm sure this is one reason Daydream is not so praised by herself. I became a fan because of Daydream, so I will love it forever.

Just maybe Daydream was the start of Walter A's betrayal that causes MC to want to forget about it the era. Tommy probably said no to a lot of the songs that strayed away from the MC and Walter A hit formula. He probably hated the fact that the young woman he discovered was challenging his vision for her career. And let's not forget about how much he hated the idea of OBD working with MC. Daydream probably reminds MC of some uncomfortable feelings during that era. Many interviews during the Daydream show MC looking very uncomfortable and nervous. Tommy's reigns were causing MC some emotional insecurities. Check them out on YouTube.

Caution is good, but Daydream is really on another sphere. Daydream is a blockbuster part two. Andrew named Music Box a "blockbuster" I loved that comparison. So I use it here. "Fantasy" alone is one of the best fun pop songs that exists. It's genius. I will never get tired of it. There is a reason why Daydream caused Mariah mania in 95 and 96. Maybe the Grammy debacle still frustrates her, I don't know.

Same. Daydream has so many faves and one of my top 3 Favorites of hers: Looking In. I recently read a few tweets where people expressed preferring songs like Thirsty, A No No, Caution, and the such over songs like Fantasy, ABMB, The Roof, and WBT. I know it's all subjective, but those fans confuse me. Daydream is such a vibe and songs like UTS, IAF, and MA deserve so much more general recognition.

Yes, 100 thumbs up for this post. Absolutely on point.
For example, I liked the debut album from Sam Smith, but since I saw his latest "performance" on stage, it's hard for me to listen to his music. Madonna and Sam Smith are very vulgar and it's just annoying. They should tour together. Lol.
On a side note: Our ministery of education has forbidden the "gendern" for the elemantary schools. There is hope. I don't know how it's in English but in German it's just grammatically wrong with the gender thing and not needed at all.
