I simply don't like cheating (53,015)

I defended Mariah many times and I still think that she has a good voice when she uses it propperly. I can understand that singing those difficult songs 100% live for 2 hours is nearly impossible, but to use pre-recorded vocals in nearly each song is too much. That's called cheating. All those good reviews that you mention are written by people who haven't "studied" Mariah as much as I've been doing for nearly two decades. Yesterday she didn't hit a single live whistle note. She didn't sound comfortable even during the "easy" parts. She was struggeling most of the time. I'm not one of those who say she can't sing live anymore, I hope she does better in her next concert, but listen, there's no need of pretending to be one of the greatest voices, she is a legend, so she should move on and stop trying desperately to belt and recording songs that she can't sing 100% live. I love Mariah, but for God's sake, she did Fantasy 100% playback and you tell me not to mention the Jamaica incident? This is not about resting her voice (which of course is important), it isn't about having a bad day (we can all have many bad days). It's about being honest and facing her current voice. She can start by re-adapting all of her classics as she did with TGIFY, amazing idea. She could work regularly with a vocal coach rehearse more and more instead of lying on the beach in the Bahamas weeks before the show. Lipsynching that much will ruin her reputation as a good singer and I want her to succeed.

So sad to see your idol destroying her classics and reputation (53,003)

I was expecting Mariah to recover her voice, I thought that after the Rockefeller performance and Jamaica's playback which became viral, she would stop doing it or at least doing it better. Yes, Love Takes Time and I Don't Wanna Cry sounded good because she re-recorded the bridges and difficult parts of the chorus. It's so sad to see my idol, the one and only Mariah Carey who once was the best voice in the business, not being able to sing just one entire song without doing playback or using a back up track. Vision Of Love was awful, I think I could even sing higher than that and better. Yes, VOL was 100% live and 90% horrible. She lipsynched/used pre-recorded vocals in all of her songs except in VOL and I'll Be There. It hurted me to see Mariah doing such a poor rendition, however I loved the combination with Michael's version and the tribute. She even lipsynched Infinity. All the whistle notes from Emotions, Someday, Love Takes Time and even Infinity were re-recorded vocals. Such a shame to watch Fantasy with her 1995 voice, clearly Mariah knows how to make us laugh. At least she could have recorded a full new version with her current voice. The only song she did very well and 100% live was Thank God I Found You. So sad to see your idol fall. So sad to think that if she could have all this big scenario and dancers and feathers and lights at her prime would have been an amazing show to watch.

Sorry, still don't like it at all (52,351)

I was hoping for a track with strong drummings, or at least a more uptempo tune like the elegant Say Something or the great #Beautiful. So tired of the wrong-called "R&B" thing. I don't like that she includes marks and names in some of her songs since TEOM. Calgon, YouTube, Wendy Williams, Barbra Walters, 20/20, Oprah Winfrey, and now Fritos? WTF? An 11 year old can write that and try to rhyme, but when it comes from a 45 year old woman it sounds ridiculous. I really don't like those references, if she wants to be recognised as the good songwriter that she is (something she always felt people didn't recognise enough) she should stop writting these childish rhymes and stop mentioning trademarks. After listening to the song several times I can say it isn't bad, but it is too bad for her. She's Mariah Carey. Her last album included masterpieces like Beautiful, Cry, Meteorite etc. Just music for the pleasure of doing it, not another desperate number one wannabe. Infinity tries to sound so commercial that makes me feel old because it feels like a song for teenagers. I can't believe this is the same woman that once wrote Butterfly or Through The Rain. It's funny because that "horrible" album called Glitter, which I happened to like a lot, as many fans, included some of her most powerful songs (ballads and uptempo songs). She just doesn't sound powerful in Infinity, it hasn't got a good structure and iconic melody which used to be Mariah's regular basis.

Infinity (52,316)

First of all, I will support Mariah. I will buy this album but I'm a bit disappointed. I thought she had enough with the mainstream "r&b". I wish you luck Mariah, but if what Sony wants is a big comeback, I think Mariah's voice can't compete with Sia's, and Infinity no way gets closer to Adele, Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars or Amy Winehouse (RIP) (examples of commercial success and good music quality). But as someone said, the whole MIAMTEC was better. Beautiful is still the best song she released since WBT. I don't feel the lyrics, too childish. The whole song sounds like if Mariah was singing desperately "I want another number one". But I feel this song is not elegant, it shouldn't be on the same album with holy gems as Vision Of Love, LTT, Emotions, We Belong Together etc. I wish Mariah takes a deep look into Sade's kind of elegance, and her smooth singing. Sade defenitely knows how to grow old and change without sounding too mainstream. Celine Dion's Love Me Back To Life single sounded so powerful in terms of vocals though it is not the music that I like. Now I understand why many people consider her the greatest diva standing. Mariah doesn't even sound powerful in Infinity nor one of the greatest voices. Maybe I'm jnbeing too critic. I definitely like some parts of the song and the idea of using violins. Hope that after listening a few more times I learn to appreciate it.

Apart from #1's, will Sony promote/celebrate her 25 years in music? (52,141)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
I hope Sony will do something related to the first album's 25 anniversary. Daydream turns 20 this year, they have tons of audiovisual material to re-release special editions from this albums (with pictures, comments, rarities and remixes not included in the origonal ones) and release concerts, live performances, etc from these albums/eras. Morover, it's the appropiate time to release a CD+DVD collection with her greatest live performances from TV shows, awards, etc. like they did with Whitney last year. By the way I agree with all of you, Sent From Up Above and Alone In Love are masterpieces. Mariah could do a great rendition of these and many other songs that would fit her current voice. It's a pity that throughout her career she never sang live gems from her albums, like There's Got To Be A Way, To Be Around You, The Wind, I've Been Thinking About You or Long Ago.

I guess a lot of us want to hear Mariah singing again Love Takes Time, Someday and I Don't Wanna Cry. These songs are essential in her career and it's been many years without singing them. I can't wait to hear them.

Emotions live (52,072)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
To me the MTV Video Music Awards from 1991 is clearly the best rendition of Emotions (along with the MTV Unplugged one) and one of her best performances ever. She hits the highest notes in her entire carreer (even higher than the ones she recorded in the studio version) and her growls are so strong that they reminded me Aretha's ones. But a few days ago I discovered on YouTube the Wogan performance in HD and it's simply delicious. She looks like she can't hit propperly the whistle notes so she avoides them, but her chest voice and the rest of her range sounds so incredibly soulful and powerful that it makes you wanna go crazy and just sing along. It's great to see that they are uploading many of those performances in HD and some that were very hard to find a few years ago like Vision Of Love at the NARM Convention from 1991 (by the way Jon, I forgot to mention this one before , one of my favourites, she looks awesome).

I always enjoy reading you. You're lovely, and I totally agree with your last post and the guitar comparison ha ha. That VOL performance is really good. This is a similar powerful VOL, from the CB Tour in Manila, I think it's even better. For those of you who enjoy Mariah's powerful and raspy voice, here she is giving her all with that gospel choir, AYNAF on the Letterman show.

I'm sorry I don't know what happens with the link. If you search on YouTube "Bruno Mars One Sweet Day", it appears a short video of Bruno Mars like in a kind of contest being asked about how many weeks did One Sweet Day spend at number one. He first says 10 weeks I think, and she sings a line from the chorus, and when he sees the correct answer (16 weeks) he says something like: Does that still happen anymore? That's why I said it was very appropiate now that he's about to beat that record.

As for many fans, this is one of my favourite songs from Mariah. One of her best and most powerful recordings. I have the 7" vinyl single. I love the guitar solo from Vernon Black. But I have to disagree, I love the Unplugged version because it turns a lot more soul with the black female vocals, the strings an everything. Also, I think it's a good idea to use it instead of the original version which was featured in the original #1's album, in the Greatest Hits album and in The Essential. However, I was never a fan of the Jackswing version used for the video (what a pity that there's not a video for the album version). What I don't like is that they chose the remix version of Fantasy again. I need a live compilation album, they could have released the #1's with more live versions of the songs.

Criticar por criticar (51,770)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|

It's ridiculous to spend time every day of your life coming to a forum to critizise an artist. Grow up. If you don't like Mariah just stop following her and her record company's moves. Remember the Mariah you liked, because that legacy will always be there on your CD collection and in your childhood/teenage memories. But you're not that child anymore. And Mariah is not the same because we all change. Being disrespectful and overjudging a singer that you don't even know (if she drinks too much) won't help to bring back the Mariah you once fell in love with. We all can express those things we don't like from her, I don't consider myself a "lamb" but a fan who's been admiring and listening to her for many years, and I can tell many things I do not agree with and that I didn't like in these last years, but since you're critizising even her music, and saying she doesn't give a shit, why continue following her? She has just released an album last year. By the way, for all of you who feel so disappointed, I understand, but don't be so negative about the album success, do you know how many artists have done the same re-releasing strategy to promote a single? From Michael Jackson to many others, and in many cases it did work.

I agree with Andrew. I like to see that they didn't overphotoshopped her face but they did with her body. Though it is very iconic and simple, I agree with you that it will (sorry, it is) generating bad press. The press from my country when it comes to Mariah sucks. They rarely talk about her music or her proffesional achievements, they focus on gossip (false affair with Brett Ratner, if she's fat, or Jamaica's playback). Only a few websites treat her as a living legend. Look at this article of one of the most important newspapers in Spain, they took the worst picture from one of her last appearences. Have you guys seen Mariah's latest picture in her Twitter? She looks like she has lost a lot of weight, looking very similar to the album cover.

VOL performance / 25 years in music deserve more releasings (51,660)
by MC1989 from Spain

|
Great to watch it. Thanks for posting it. I believe it's from the 25 Countdown from 1990 where she also slayed Love Takes Time. When is Sony going to release these live performances on a DVD? A compilation of her best live performances in these 25 years would be the greatest way to mark and celebrate her 25 years in music. I like the idea of reissuing #1's but I miss something related to the anniversary of the debut album. A deluxe edition with pictures from 1990, the videos from Vision Of Love to There's Got To Be A Way and live material from that era would be a nice and appropiate way of outmarking the importance of such a great debut album. Also, this year Daydream turns 20, one of the biggest selling albums of the 90's.

Beautiful acoustic (51,436)
by MC1989 from Spain

Jon thanks for posting it. It's amazing, I think I like it even more than the original version. I really believe Beautiful is Mariah's best commercial song since We Belong Together. I share your thoughts about that she should do an unplugged concert with acoustic renditions of her songs (old and current ones). Everytime she gives a little taste of that (like the impro performance for the fans at J. Fallon) she sounds great.

I was born in 1989 and my earliest Mariah memory is the Emotions LP which was in the living room (by the way it's so hard to find vinyls from Mariah, the ones I have I had to buy them via internet, second hand vinyls). I first heard about her during 1995-96 with the big success of Daydream. I was 6/7 and I remember listening to Open Arms on the radio during the Spice Girls boom lol. My favourite album is the first one. Though I bought it when I was a teenager, it brings me a lot of memories and it still is my favourite with Daydream, Butterfly and The Emancipation Of Mimi.

Hi guys, I just wanted to share this amazing song with you. I'm going through a lot of pain in my life these days due to a complicated relationship and many other changes. Hero performance (50,887)
by MC1989 from Spain
| |
|
|
You can watch Mariah's performance of Hero last night here. I think it was good, but I believe she needs more rehearsing, because some of her improvisations didn't sound good to me. I think she's refusing to work with a vocal coach and she needs to do it desperately, to sound confident in her actual range and stop lipping "you'll find the way yeah". A vocal coach teaches you better ways to breathe while singing, to sing from the stomach and to exercise your voice, without hurting it. Mariah still has a beautiful voice, and she still can sound very powerful when she tries, but there's a lack of rehearsing, or at least it's not enough. I've seen better performances of Hero during her last tour. The stage presence (not hers, but the performance itself) looked so cheap. The only real musician was the pianist (I liked his impros) but they played the song (the back track) like a karaoke. The performance looked like a rehearsal, not as the final result. It seems that Mariah uses her live performances to rehearse her adlibs and that's something that needs to be done at home, especially with her current voice.
