Mariah signs with Universal? (108,524)

Wasn't one of her conditions for re-signing with Sonly that she gets back all of her master tapes?

Mariah signs with Universal? (108,521)
by T from USA
| |
|

All her email correspondence is now being sent by Universal Records. I find it interesting that she got through Merry Christmas 30th anniversary and then this switch. Maybe that was the last Sony reissue anniversary addition being released. And now she's going to do the Universal albums so she's signed back with them? That would mean no Daydream 30. But we did get Daydream 25, Butterfly 25 and Rainbow 25. So in one way there is no need for anymore Sony reissue anniversary additions. Now she can focus on TEOM 20, EMC2, Memoirs, The Elusive Chanteuse and Charmbracelet. And possible a new album from a UMG label.

Just makin' the most of life (108,401)

Jamie, you're 100% spot on. Mariah resents most of the things from her early days. To quote Tommy Mottola about Hero: "The bottom line is that nobody was putting words in her mouth. The song came from her own soul. It just wasn't the direction she wanted to be going in. Her next album, Music Box, was a great mix of styles. But for her, Hero was not even a small piece of that pie. I saw Hero as Mariah's missing piece. This was the magical piece that was going to open up every demographic to her. Mariah wasn't happy about it. But Hero was on her next album. This had to be another example for her of seeing me as being controlling. I really don't think she got it until Hero became a hit in every country of the world. She was just a kid when she wrote that song, but she probably didn't get it until she turned into an adult." I wish she could overcome all those traumas and live on as a free spirit.

Just makin' the most of life (108,399)
by Jamie from UK

The reason she is still relevant and receiving icon awards is because of her early career, those days influenced everything and everyone. If none of that had happened and she came out as she is now I'm afraid she wouldn't be getting and awards. We're nostalgic because she was amazing then, we lived through it and we miss it. None of us are saying she isn't relevant anymore as a person, but music career wise unfortunately no is buying her new stuff. Even her Christmas mania is based on an early period of her career, and let me guess when that was, oh yes its the time we're all nostalgic about. Mariah is a legend and she's reached icon status but it's not for her current music career, unfortunately it's her past.

Always Be My Nodules (108,363)

For me the best Elton's vocals are on Good Bye Yellow Brick Road and Someone Saved My Life Tonight type of songs. Though I adore his Lion King soundtrack. George Michael's voice is out of this world. I wish he had collaborated with MC in the 90s. Probably MC is like Mariah Callas. Her voice is gone but she has no courage to accept that.

I really think Elton John's voice actually got better after his surgery, stronger and fuller. Just listen to his live duet of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" with George Michael in 1991. He gave Michael a run for his money.
Sadly, Julie Andrews throat surgery was basically a disaster, but according to her, it was more of a medical malpractice situation.
These days, though, science has come a long way. Singers like Adele, Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake, and Sam Smith have all had voice saving vocal cord surgeries. But things have changed for the better with today's technology, treatments, and vocal therapy. It's wild to think how much medicine has evolved. A surgery that could have ended a career years ago might actually save one today.

Julie Andrews underwent multiple vocal cord surgeries beginning in 1997, and her voice never fully recovered. Elton John had his surgery in 1987, and his voice was never the same afterward. I'm certain Mariah Carey is aware of these cases, and that there's always a high risk of complications.

So, I'm doing some insomniac strolling through social media, and I see a video of Monica talking about why she has sounded a mess as of late. She had surgery and went back to singing and didn't listen to her doctor's instructions. I did some digging and found out she had surgery on her nodules. My jaw was as wide as Kelly Price's at Thanksgiving. Monica had been sounding awful according to clips I saw on Tik Tok and I just passed it off as maybe she wasn't as talented as I once thought. I even went so far as to declare the boy now belonging to Brandy. Monica is of little consequence to me because she was never vocally on MC, Celine or Whitney's level. But what this means for MC speaks volumes. Maybe she heard about the risk and was like "Nah, I'm good." What if they told her she could lose her whistle? That's part of her brand now. Although, side note, I'd rather the high chest belts more than the whistle. She uses that as a crutch to prove she still has "it". She now whistles more than a thousand gay tea kettles in London. But seriously, Monica was talking about a four month rehab and recovery. We all know discipline is the arch-nemesis of Mariah Carey. Even if she had the surgery, you think she would listen to instructions? I really want y'all to weigh in on this. Not you Kelly Price. I just can hear MC singing to her nodules, "You'll always be a part of me."

Yes, and? (105,475)

I don't know yet. I really hoped for a reworked version, with different arrangements. At least Mariah is finally on Max Martin's track. I like the original "yes, and?". Especially the video with the dance routine, though for me the production is missing something. It has great potential but is rather "undercooked" still.

I am gonna play it until my battery runs off and I really like the song but I believe people are divided. Twitter stans are hating. I personally love uptempo vogue dancey tracks so that's why I liked it so much but I think the general public is finally realizing that Mariah's voice has changed. Ariana is like the fourth most listened singer on Spotify so that will bring a lot of attention to Mariah and her voice. I am curious about what you guys think.

Obsessed ft. 50 Cent (104,727)
by Dennis from Miami, FL

If it was 2004-2005 maybe. But in 2009 I doubt it. Obsessed is a great song. I prefer it over TMB. I'm not 100% sure, but wasn't Jay Sean's Down #1 around that time? Overall I believe MOIA release was too chaotic and too soon after E=MC2. Barbra Streisand and Paramore occupied the top of album charts.

I am concerned too, Andrew. My worst nightmare is that Mariah's whole catalogue will go down the drain because of this Christmas song, alone. But remember, we are all living in our own time, Mariah might be content with that song being her only legacy per now.
But, as with you, it devastates me that most people won't know her other songs.
I guess we as fans, just need to micro dose people with other stuff, like I have done the last 25 years. There is not a single soul I have met in my life that won't think of me whenever a Mariah song is played.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas, thank you for this community, going to listen to "One Child" now, love you.

I just watched. There is a snippet of new version of My All. I have listened again to Kanye's version - the lyrics and arrangements are the same. A few years ago Mariah said that she liked Kanye's version of My All and would like to perform it. Then for few years there was nothing. Now it is part of her Christmas show. I like his version, but I like the original more. The new version is called "Christmas Gospel Version".

MB30 - reflections (103,546)
by Dennis from Miami, FL

I'm more "satisfied" with MB30 release than with Butterfly 25. I don't know why. Probably, it's the nostalgia. Or I like her Music Box voice more. I really wish she had released "full voice" version of 4th of July. I've heard snippets on YouTube and I really would love to hear all the takes. Other than that I'm more than happy with whatever comes my way. Wishing all of you the best best "mi arma". Lots of love from the other side.

MB30 - reflections (103,478)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
Now some time has passed, here are my thoughts.
Disc 1: I've always loved the album, and never understood the group of fans that dismissed it. It's beautifully sung, expertly recorded, it showed more nuances to her voice than before, and her "pen game" as you kids call it these days for some reason, was superb. A 23 year-old writing Anytime You Need a Friend, Never Forget You, Hero, Dreamlover, Everything Fades Away? Wow. Speaking of Everything Fades Away, it was pleasing Mariah included this on the 'original' album. I know over the years each side of the pond has stated their case for the better finish to the album. Perhaps we can agree that All I've Ever Wanted is a gorgeous finale and send off, whereas Everything Fades Away is the hauntingly beautiful epilogue? Looking at this site's discography, more versions of the album included it than didn't, and it seems like Mariah herself views it as the true ending to the album.
Disc 2: Okay wow. It's strange how on The Rarities, All I Live For was just, there. It was a pleasant little bop, but I was like "yeah, I get why it was left off." How is the extended version like a thousand times better? Honestly it elevates the song to a whole new level, and her vocals are astonishing. Great to see Luther added, as I always viewed Endless Love as part of the Music Box era, and was surprised the album never got re-issued to include it after it did so well. Workin' Hard and My Prayer I can't keep away from. I adore them. I am so sad they were locked up in the vault for 30 years, but look at them now having their day in the sun. The TOTP performances and remixes I am happy with, especially as the two full-length 10-minute epic and iconic club mixes were included. The only small hang up I have is with Hero (2009 Version). Firstly, it was recorded in 2008, so let's get that out the way. Second, I think I would have preferred the Spanish version to be included as it was 'of the time', whereas this was a good stretch afterwards, so it feels somewhat out of place. Everything else is from the period (save the two new mixes). I detested the re-recording when it came out to promote The Ballads, but as I have mellowed I see it was what it was. It's fine now, I'm at peace with it, but yeh. It's the only point where I pause briefly.
Disc 3: We all love Proctor's Theatre don't we. What a concert. For many of us, the first one we saw. I also had two worn out VHS in my time, and then switched to the DVD when that was issued. It is my go-to 'comfort' concert. Whenever I've had a bad day and I need lifting up, or I'm perturbed by the world and all what's going on, I watch it. It takes me back to childhood, the wonder that was early Mariah, the nostalgia I wallow in, the happy memories it invokes. Like a few of you, every move, hand gesture, giggle, is committed to memory. Having it on audio is so, so good.
General: Again, I never had an issue with the original cover. It was a bit botched on the cassette version as she was half a head, but the CD always looked beautiful. It gave a Marilyn Monroe vibe, and had a certain simplicity to it. The uncropped version is equally as nice though. If anyone's gone into panic mode over the physical release having a big border around the original cover, this is a slip case that will reveal the uncropped cover beneath it.
But thank you Mariah, for everything. 10/10.

I agree that Music Box/Merry Christmas era voice was the best. I for one don't like her Daydream album and tour voice as much as I like her 1994 and 1997 voice. For me a studio album in 1998 would have been perfect, much better than #1's.

If you could have one extra album squeezed in over the years where would you want it? I think I’d have liked another album squeezed in before Daydream. Being married to Mariah, an interracial person herself, I don't see Tommy as a racist. He has converted to Judaism, then to Catholic faith in his lifetime. I see him as rather a manipulator. He wanted Mariah to appeal to widest demographic possible at that time. That implied she could not be anything specific (black, white, latina, etc), she had to be an all American girl. Same about him saying that Puffy in few years would shine his shoes. He used an inappropriate metaphor without even realising that. I doubt he was saying that because of the race. Rather he said that because of his obsession with mob culture.
For me Tommy is an opportunist, obsessed with power, control and money. I am sure, though I don't have the stats, that Mariah's albums were giving more financial return than let's say Celine's or MJ albums because Mariah didn't work with people like David Foster or Max Martin. Most of here music was produced in-house, her music videos from that era are cute but rather low budget, all of her CDs design eas basic - 1 or 2 photos, fold in leaflet, mediocre paper quality. Janet's, Madonna's CD designs from the same era are superior. I'm sure, she was getting a tiny fraction of what she was earning in 1990-1999.
