Mariah vs Brenda (104,327)
by The Real Deal from USA
| |
|
|
What in the actual [censored]? It's not a conspiracy. It's called marketing a song that's already popular and trying to get it to #1. The same way Mariah markets AIWFCIY every year is no different then Brenda Lee putting out a music video for her song. Um, didn't MC make 4 videos for AIWFCIY? And whoever wrote the message "now that they slapped a blonde wig on Brenda" - are you serious? Stop trying to make a conspiracy out of everything when there is none.

Mariah vs Brenda (104,318)
by Robert-Anthony from United States

Thanks for the update, Edward. Seems like there is a considerable effort this year to keep MC from getting to number one or staying number one for multiple weeks this year. UMG is Brenda Lee's record label. They are really going all out this year with this huge promotional push to celebrate RATCT's 65th anniversary. But why now after 4 years of AIWFCIY being the number one Christmas song?
Well I think I know why. Some people in the music and television industry are tired of hearing MC being called the queen of Christmas. It started when MC wanted to trademark the Queen Of Christmas last year. She angered Darlene Love and Elizabeth Chan. Many in the music and television industry were angered by MC's trademark move as well. So, I feel this is their payback for MC attempting to take the queen of Christmas all for herself and from sweet Darlene Love. Everyone already feels sorrow for her how Phil Spector used her voice and she never was publicly credited on a lot the songs she did for him. Phil Spector controlled her early career and was content to leave her uncredited on the songs he did for him.
Do you think that I have hit on something?

Are we all forgetting about "Honey"? A song about semen. "It's like honey when it washes over me." She's actually never denied the sexual innuendos in that song when brought up.

Lol. Definitely have a hot playlist there. The beauty about Bliss is that it was MC's only sexual themed song until One Mo Gen. I like Bliss better because MC's vocals and incredible whistle notes. Tommy would never have allowed a Bliss type of song prior to 1999. Lol.

I disagree. MC always speaks fondly of the Dreamlover and Anytime You Need A Friend videos in post 2000s interviews. She even released an alternative video version of Anytime You Need A Friend a few years back. In addition, she sang and posted an acapella of Everything Fades Away backstage with singer JoJo. The only thing she has dismissed is Hero but says she appreciates it now.

Maybe I can listen to just one song occasionally. That song is NFY. I called Music Box Tommy's control album. He was so disappointed with the heavy R&B influence and low sales of Emotions that Tommy mandated a more pop influence like MC's debut. Music Box's album cover pose is less than flattering too and one heck of a boring album cover. It reminds me of what Tommy was trying to do to suffocate MC by having her pose like young opera singer at a New York concert hall full of middle-aged married couples. MB is just one boring album from start to finish. Thank God two years later, MC gave us the beautiful Daydream.

Rolling Stone's 200 Greatest Singers (102,007)
by Norman from USA
| |
|
|
After reading about this list and everyone being up in arms about several choices, I decided to Google other lists to see how they differ. I found that they all seem to be off on their picks. How can you make a list of the greatest singers/vocalists, and then take their popularity into account in their ranking order? I mean, how in the world does that pertain to vocal ability?
Not to knock singers/performers with limited vocal range or ability (I can think of several in that department that punch above their weight when delivering an emotional and touching song), but it seems only logical to rank them on their ability, right?
Any time I see a list with Paul McCartney, Elvis, or John Lennon in the top 5/10, I know I can't take them seriously. I know a lot of it is subjective because music as a whole is that way, but at have the right players on the board when you're picking.
Who would you guys pick to be in the top 20 (I think it gives a lot more wiggle room for to include people who you can move around if necessary)? Here are my players (in no particular order):
Mariah (obviously) Whitney Celine Etta James Aretha Ella Freddie Mercury Donny Hathaway Luther Linda Ronstadt Marvin Gaye Stevie Wonder Bono Rocio Durcal Prince Barb[a]ra Streisand George Michael Al Green Axl Rose Tina Turner
Picking these was pretty difficult because it's still biased toward certain genres (and heavily American), but there's no denying they can sing. There are still several other picks I could swap for one another (I wanted to put Ray Charles, James Brown, Robert Plant, Patti Labelle, Billy Ocean, Peabo Bryson, Donna Summer, Jeffrey Osborne, Annie Lennox, Kenny Rogers, and countless others), but at least they're all talented singers/vocalists.
What say you?

Well, just like they pushed poor Whitney into embarrassment by encouraging her into touring when she wasn't ready, Marian also has her "yass queen" sycophants and some delusional fans that wouldn't give to fs about her as long as they get a glimpse of her. The thing is now with cellphones it is impossible to keep any concert/performance isolated.

Furthermore, the Grammy's do not go by sales or chart positions. So for those that keep saying that One Sweet Day was the longest running #1 song, etc, it doesn't reflect the Grammy's position of voting. Case in point - Joni Mitchell's "Indigo Blue" wasn't even a Top 40 album prior to receiving the Album Of The Year nomination. Also, Annie Lennox "No More I Love You's" peaked at #23 on Billboard Hot 100.

I'm really sick of the victim aspect of the 1996 Grammys. It was not personal. There were so many amazing albums and songs up against each other that year including Daydream. They acknowledged her as having the biggest selling song of that year by having her open the show. To twist the narrative into something personal or vindictive is just silly.

Re: Question (99,912) (99,913)

Actually, Mary J. did it in 1992 with a bunch of remixes from What's The 411, including Notorious BIG very first appearance on a single with "Real Love". Then in 1994, Madonna did it with a song called "I'd Rather Be Your Lover", initially featuring Tupac but then scratched and put on her "Bedtime Stories" album with Me'Shell NdegeOcello instead. So that part about Mariah being the first to add hip hop artists into a song duet genre always confused me.

What makes it even worse is that they already shot a video for the song "More Than A Woman", which was good to go, and then for some reason they decided to film a video for "Rock The Boat" and put that out first, even though the "More Than A Woman" one was already finished and edited! And it was released after "Rock The Boat", so they did use it.

I agree 1000 percent about Molly, the "assistant". As a matter of fact, in the montage preview for the season, they show Mariah doing the prank call and Kristopher is the one that they are pranking, not Molly! So obviously it was staged because when the episode aired, it was Molly that they pranked instead.

Re: Worst song ever made? (98,192) (98,194)
by The Real Deal from USA

"Somewhat Loved" is totally fine as an album cut. I like it. As a single, I don't think it's strong enough. I actually like "Infamous" from "Empire" very much. I wish that it was promoted more. It reminded me of those late 90s/early 2000s pop/r&b crossover duets. In regard to the weakest singles pulled from her category (not album cuts), I would have to say:
1) I Don't - Her vocals are very weak on this song and YG rapping "I'll make you love me; even though you don't trust me" repeats way too damn much in the song.
2) Infinity - Because of most of the lyrics. However, I think her vocals on it sound great.
3) Save The Day - The mix sounds like a rough demo. I've actually heard demos that were better quality. The vocals also are also not up to par.
3) Boy (I Need You) - Not a bad song at all, but a bad single choice because upon its release, the original Cam'ron version was only 8 months old, and still receiving alot of airplay. Hence, many non Mariah fans thought it was just an additional remix version of his song. It would be like if another artist put out their own version of "Levitating" right now, while Dua Lipa's version is still on the charts.
4) GTFO - Again, her vocals sound weak and the shock value that she may have been looking for didn't resonate. There were no headlines saying "Mariah uses the F word in a song title". I sincerely believe the only reason she chose this as a single was for the F word shock value. Sidenote: I don't care about promo single or teaser - once you release it as a standalone track on iTunes and make a music video for it, then it is a single. I don't care what record execs say!
5) Loverboy - Yes I said it. The chorus of the released version does nothing for me. It sound slike background vocals waiting for a lead vocal chorus. The original intended Firecracker version brought the chorus vocals out more.
Nobody has mentioned "You're Mine (Eternal)", but I want to say that I love that track. I just don't think it should've been the lead single from MIAM. A more uptempo cut would've served better, such as "Thirsty", "Meteorite", or "You Don't Know What To Do".
