Mariah Carey was "annoyed" by the way people referred to one of her classic albums. In an exclusive interview with People, the "Emotions" singer, 56, revealed that she wasn't a fan of when people called her 10th studio album The Emancipation of Mimi - which celebrated its 20th anniversary on Saturday, April 12 - a "comeback album".
"At the time, it annoyed me when they called it a comeback album," said Carey. "But now I'm just like, 'Oh yeah, my comeback album.'" However, now Carey finds the description "somewhat accurate". She added that if people "know the album, then they usually are fans of the album".
"But not everybody knows that album," added Carey. "So people can discover various songs and kind of get to know the feeling of that album.
The "All I Want for Christmas Is You" hitmaker said that the album remains "very special" to her. During a recent episode of Vevo's Footnotes, Carey detailed the making of her hit from The Emancipation of Mimi, "We Belong Together".
People had a first look at the episode, where the R&B icon detailed how the track was one of the last written for the LP and was crafted with Jermaine Dupri who also produced "It's Like That" and "Shake It Off".
The video, which was the second chapter in the love-triangle she introduced in the music video for "It's Like That", was a first for Carey. "I was excited to be able to tell a story that spanned over two music videos. It was the first time I ever did that, and I knew we'd be able to bring them together despite the songs being sonically different," she said.
In the visual, Carey sported the Vera Wang wedding dress she wore to her 1993 wedding to Tommy Mottola. (The pair divorced in 1998.) "Since I was going to do a scene with a wedding dress, rather than spend tons of money on a new dress, we just used the one I had lying around!" she said of her fashion choice.
Later, Carey married Nick Cannon in 2008 and divorced in 2016. The former couple share 13-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe.
The Emancipation of Mimi was initially released in April 12, 2005, and went on to sell six million copies in the U.S. alone - 10 million globally. It also earned Carey 10 Grammy nominations.
