4 Music celebrates Mariah
4 Music will be celebrating Mariah Carey on Thursday evening with two feature length documentaries and performances from her recent album E=MC2. 7.00pm - Mariah: From The Beginning: From soulful balladeer to R'n'B diva, Mariah Carey has transformed her image over almost 20 years in the business. Here we take a look at the defining moments from her hugely successful career. 8.30pm - 4 Music Presents: Mariah Carey: Steve Jones chats to Mariah Carey. Featuring performances from E=MC2. 9.00pm - Mariah Carey: The Billion Dollar Babe: Mariah Carey: The Billion Dollar Babe lifts the lid on the crazy world of the biggest selling female pop star of all time. At its heart is the bizarre affair of Mariah's very public breakdown when she started stripping on live TV and posting weird messages to fans on her website. Not long after she checked in to a private clinic, exhausted by trying to live up to the demands of the richest deal in recording history and was abruptly dumped by Virgin/EMI. It looked like the end of the Mariah Carey fairy tale, yet this year, in an amazing turn around, Mariah is back on the magazine covers, and back in Britain.
This unauthorized profile tells the rags-to-riches story of the ambitious teenager from Long Island, New York, with an operatic seven-octave voice, who met the most powerful man in the music recording industry by chance, and then married him. It is the tale of the girl who became the workaholic pop diva with the Midas touch: she was bigger than Madonna, bigger than Michael Jackson, and had 15 US number one hits - more than anyone other than Elvis Presley and the Beatles. The programme features the contributions of an array of musical collaborators - including Jay Z and Walter Afanasieff - key record industry executives, Mariah's friends and biographers, and music critics Paul Morley and Caroline Sullivan.
