1987: Mariah Carey is Harborfields High grad
Convinced she was destined to become a rock star, Mariah Carey missed so many classes while attending Harborfields High School in Greenlawn that she earned the nickname "Mirage". In 1987, Carey moved to New York City the day after graduation to pursue a singing career and she soon became a back-up singer for Brenda K. Starr.
Carey's prediction about her inevitable stardom soon came true: she signed with Columbia Records the following year, going on to become the biggest-selling female recording artist of the 1990's, with over 120 million album sales worldwide. Carey released her latest CD, "Charmbracelet", in December 2002. Carey is shown here in 2002 and as a Harborfields High student. (Newsday)
