Mariah Carey earns an absurd amount of money per day

Mariah Carey has made more than €2m from Spotify streams of "All I Want for Christmas for You" to date, including €567,980 last Christmas alone, according to Broadband Deals' Pay Per Play report.

Carey's Christmas classic has been played more than 506m times on the Swedish streaming service, and was played 143,762,983 times over the 2018 festive period, earning the pop legend more than half a million euro at €0.004 per stream.

"All I Want for Christmas Is You" is the most popular Christmas song on Spotify, ahead of Wham's "Last Christmas" (350.6m streams) and Ariana Grande's "Santa Tell Me" (253m streams), which have both made over €1m in royalties since being uploaded to the service.

Between November 9 and December 28 last year, "All I Want for Christmas Is You" made €11,360 per day and around €43,200 on Christmas Eve when it was streamed 10.8m times worldwide, and most frequently in the US, UK and Germany.

It is likely Carey will make even more from the song this Christmas after it was used in an advert for British crisp brand Walkers. She has also released a special Christmas album on Spotify to mark the song's 25th anniversary.

She may be out-earned by Canadian crooner Michael BublĂ© though, who looks set to earn over €600,000 this Christmas from streams of his festive songs "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas", "Holly Jolly Christmas", "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town", and "White Christmas".

Songs featured in the annual John Lewis Christmas advert have also proven lucrative, with Lily Allen's cover of "Somewhere Only We Know" (189.6m streams) making €748,345 and Ellie Goulding's take on "Your Song" (142.8m) earning €563,412.

The research also shows Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" from the Disney animated smash Frozen has been streamed over 326.2m times on Spotify since upload, with earnings of €1.29m.

Spotify on Tuesday revealed that Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" is its most played track of the decade, earning him €9.1m with 2.3bn streams, while Drake was the most-streamed artist of the 2010s overall.
