Mariah rented this Connecticut mansion for $75K/month

How much does it cost to live like Mariah Carey? Needless to say, it's pretty far from a song. The five-time Grammy-winning artist had been renting this Connecticut property for $75,000 a month for almost two years, starting in July 2023. Now it's on the market for sale and can be yours for $13.9 million, Gimme Shelter has learned - down from its initial $16.9 million ask in 2022.

Known as Orchard's End, the New Canaan estate sits on 6.25 acres. The grand brick-and-limestone main residence, a Tudor mansion at 544 Oenoke Ridge, was built in 1929.

The property was also once owned by the late Carlos Hank González, nicknamed "El Profesor" - the former businessman, governor of Mexico State and 1976 mayor of Mexico City - who built a massive 9-foot-high, 2-feet-thick, 1,500-foot-long fieldstone wall for "privacy and security", something that could never be done today, said listing broker Danielle Malloy of Serhant.

Malloy shares the listing with fellow Serhant broker Jessica Lane. (Gonzalez paid $875,000 for the property in 1980, according to reports.) Carey loved the property so much that she built a recording studio there - although it has since been transformed back into a yoga studio, Malloy said.

"It has that timeless architecture. It's an iconic, beautiful property - like a castle," Malloy said. The current sellers bought the property for $6.5 million in 2014. They then hired world-renowned architect Dinyar Wadia to undertake a three-year, $6 million renovation and expansion.

The stunning home was originally designed by New York architect William B. Tubby. It comes with 12 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms and four powder rooms. The estate now also comes with a new-construction, 2,000-square-foot, four-bedroom guest house, and a 5,000-square-foot wellness center, along with a custom spa.

Carey lived in the home with her kids, and had her staff reside in the guest house. "It's a perfect home for a multi-generational family, and it is now priced to sell," Malloy said.

The main residence's new addition includes a new chef's kitchen, a great room with 35-foot-high ceilings, an outdoor courtyard and a study. Wadia has said that he found inspiration for the great room from Castle Duart on the Isle of Mull - featured in "Entrapment", the 1999 art-heist film starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

That extraordinary room boasts a double-height ceiling, a large stone fireplace and custom bronze handrails that lead to a second-story mezzanine.

The great room connects to the main residence via a glass-paned corridor with iron frames and divided lights - with captivating views of the garden terrace on one side, and the new chef's kitchen from the courtyard on the other. Thanks to roof lights in the kitchen and double-height bay windows in the great room, the new space is well lit.

The estate also boasts a wine cellar and a 14-seat movie theater. Outside, the property has a pool, an outdoor fireplace, formal gardens, fountains, a water wall, a gated front entrance and a basketball court.
