Mariah Carey is sticking to her side of the story! The pop sensation is insisting that every account she gave in her memoir was factual as she faces an amended lawsuit from her brother, Morgan Carey. Mariah Carey's memoir "The Meaning of Mariah Carey" was released in 2020 with clear details about her childhood experiences with her late mom and her brother.
The singer has voiced her anger towards her estranged brother, Morgan, in the wake of their ongoing legal battle that has intensified just months after their mother's passing.
Recently, Morgan requested to amend his lawsuit against Mariah, which stems from his 2021 lawsuit over her memoir, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey". He claims the book portrays him unfairly as a violent drug dealer from their childhood and asserts that these accusations have damaged his reputation.
Mariah firmly denies any wrongdoing, standing by the truth of the statements made in her memoir. She cites that their mother had informed her about Morgan's involvement in drug dealings, supported by others familiar with their past.
In a declaration, she described Morgan as someone deeply immersed in the nightlife of Manhattan, claiming he often possessed and provided cocaine to his associates. Although the court dismissed most of Morgan's claims, In Touch claimed it allowed him to pursue a couple of specific allegations against Mariah.
Morgan sought permission from the court to amend his lawsuit after discovering a YouTube documentary from 2025 that features Mariah discussing her experiences. In the documentary, she claims that her family conspired against her, noting that they had her institutionalized and medicated following the signing of a major record deal.
Morgan believes these statements are false and alleges that Mariah was referring to him and their mother. He also suggested that Mariah controls the YouTube account behind the documentary.
In response, Mariah filed a motion opposing Morgan's attempt to amend his complaint. She declared that their mother, who could have served as a key witness regarding the events mentioned in the documentary, had passed away. She also pointed out that the YouTube account does not claim affiliation with her and primarily features videos related to her life and career.
As reported by The Blast, Morgan sought to amend his lawsuit, aiming to include additional claims of "defamatory" statements in his case against the performer. He contended that Mariah and her team did not reach out to him for a response before publishing the book, denying him the opportunity to contest the allegations publicly.
Among the statements in question is a disturbing passage where Mariah claims that in 1980, Morgan accepted money from a woman to kill her husband but later backed out. Following this, the woman herself committed the murder, and Morgan testified during her trial.
Morgan emphasized in his amended suit that neither he nor his mother ever attempted to have Mariah institutionalized or gain control of her finances, labeling her claims "a vicious lie".
Mariah and Morgan's case has witnessed significant developments since it began, including a judge has ruling that the singer must physically confront her estranged brother. The order required both siblings to participate in depositions by January 31, 2025. Despite her obligation to engage in the legal proceedings, Mariah can request limitations on the discovery process.
The ruling came in the wake of a profound family tragedy, as both their mother, Patricia Carey, and their sister, Alison Carey, passed away on the same day in August. Mariah expressed her grief in an emotional statement, sharing her heartbreak over the loss of her mother and the tragic circumstances surrounding her sister's death.
"My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," she wrote. Despite their strained relationship, Mariah revealed that she spent the last week of her mother's life by her side.
Before her passing, Alison took legal action against Mariah, alleging that claims made in Mariah's memoir publicly humiliated her. Their long-standing estrangement led Alison to file a lawsuit seeking $1.25 million in damages.
She accused Mariah of causing severe emotional distress with her "heartless, vicious, vindictive, despicable, and unnecessary" words. Alison further contended that Mariah exploited her celebrity status to attack her, tarnishing her reputation in a bid for publicity and increased book sales.
The impact of Mariah's portrayal left Alison devastated, as she added that it significantly added to the challenges she was experiencing. Looks like the back-and-forth between Mariah Carey and Morgan Carey is here to stay!
