Mariah's assistant dismisses star's "diva" label in new book

Matthew Stevens, a former assistant to Mariah Carey, is opening up about his years working behind the velvet rope. Talking with the Daily Express US, Stevens described Carey as "kind, smart, witty", and dismissed the "diva" label often attached to her.

"She's unbelievably talented, of course," he said, emphasizing her down-to-earth ways. "To me, she is in no way a diva when it comes to the negative connotation." But working with the people around her was another story.

"Everyone was constantly battling to be the closest person to her," he said. "They were also one way to her face, and completely different behind her back. They were the true divas."

Stevens, who nearly joined the teams of Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and Diddy, said those circles were often filled with "sycophants trying to bleed the celebrity dry".

He left his job after a major shakeup in Carey's team, caused by someone she trusted "betraying her so much to the point Mariah couldn't trust anyone anymore".

"There was no drama between me and Mariah," he said. "But when someone puts a celebrity in bad situations, everyone connected to that person gets cleared out."

Despite the chaos, Stevens said the job changed his life. "I got to travel the world via private jets, stay in the nicest hotels, AND get paid for it? It was a dream come true."
