I echo the sentiments of everyone here who praised Mariah on how she handled the situation. I may be disappointed in her determination to keep up this now fully exposed charade of her still being able to sing like she used to, but this may be her most mature and legendary act yet. The whole world was watching, things took a turn for the worse in the most embarrassing way possible, and yet she took full responsibility for it by standing there and powering through the madness when pretty much any other artist would have just stomped out or thrown a hissy fit of epic proportions right then and there. This is how I defend her against bashers out there. I simply go, "Face it - even Beyonce would've cussed her way out and sobbed in the corner but Mariah endured every painful moment." You don't get to be considered the (all caps) diva for nothing.

Andrew, you've gone from singing Stella's praises to admitting Mariah shouldn't have hired her. I give it another month of messiness until you see the light and admit she's a horrendous leech who only has her own best interests at heart.

She may be a cheesy hasbeen but Marie Osmond got it. She's been around the block and has probably been in this situation before and knew that there is nothing can be done in this situation.

Let's face it, Mariah may never recover from the NYE debacle. She may never be taken seriously (musically) again. The reality is, she needs a reinvention. Mariah needs to drop the diva act. She is no longer relatable. Humble yourself. Try taking up some causes (publicly) and show people you care more than your make-up/hair, diamonds, champagne and yachts. Hire a new stylist. As nice as your boobs look, people are tired of seeing them popping out. You can still be sexy, in a classy way. Vocal training, or retraining. Know and own your vocal limits. Lower/change the key, on songs you can no longer fully sing live. It's obvious (especially now) when MC is lip-syncing. She has gotten careless and lazy, way too many times. Some of us Lambs will say, "She doesn't need to prove herself anymore." We cannot continue lie to ourselves. If MC wants to continue being in the music world and the public eye, she has to show she is still passionate about it. Currently, her looks take priority over everything else. I wish her the best for 2017, but she really needs to get it together.

Dear diary... (70,721)
by Andrew from UK

So what's going on in the Stella Bulochnikov Archives today? First up, the Asian Superfan obsessing over Stella with a voodoo doll and. Over. And over. And over, again. Next up, some gay guy bitching about Stella's make up. And this just in: Stella's a twat. Who knew? But wait, what's this? Is it a bird, is it a plane? No. It's Stellabitch. Here to ruin everyone's lives with her dastardly plan to drug and manipulate Mariah. Mariah has just been torn apart by the public in, probably, every nation of the world. Stella may be a gobby prick, and, assuredly, not the person who Mariah should have hired, but Mariah chose Stella for her own ends, not for mine, nor for yours, nor, indeed, "ours". Mariah is both the question and the answer here. I do have to agree with Sheila (well, let Sheila agree with me ) that Mariah acted with total decorum. I have been telling people what I believe actually to have happened and how proud I am of her for the way she handled it. To stand there, and endure that, and not strop and walk off, well, what a [censored] legend. That's what I'll take from that. [censored] legend. The show had to go on. Of course, now, it kinda has to stop. Time to go home. But what a [censored] legend.

We blame Stella too much. Mariah when she discovered the earpiece wasn't working should have done a Whitney and dropped the mic and said "fix it".

Yes JD wasn't good at managing either. I never liked Tommy but he knew how to manage a superstar. Is it so difficult to find a manager who is nice, smart and a real professional? I mean money can't be the problem.

My question is, why is that the album version of We Belong Together was the one being played? Does that mean Mariah planned to lip the whole song? If it is indeed to help her and just a back-up plan, then how can they have that already instead of just the instrumental with the pre-recorded vocals at the climax? Is it normal for every live performances? So if that's the case, they can obviously cut it right before WBT starts (and for Stella being an aggressive, I know she can go straight to the booth just to stop it) to save Mariah from embarrassment. And also why Mariah knew that it's the album version that early? It's interesting. I wish she didn't sang along to it so that it doesn't look like she's lip syncing because no matter how Mariah's team or anyone defends that it's a technical malfunction, 90% of the people already named and believed it was a lip syncing fail, and Gigi was right, this huge reaction that they don't really care for Mariah anymore is the consequence on how she was presented herself and by her team in public for this past 2 years. A great live performance and appropriate behavior is the only way she can redeem herself from it, so good luck with that Dubai Jazz Festival in February, I hope she will be prepared on it and remind Stella what is the timezone in Dubai so that she can't be late. All eyes will be on her next performance so go hard on that one.

Thank you for all the explanations. I don't know anything about sound engineering, so I couldn't even imagine what she was experiencing. However, I was just wondering how she could hear that We Belong Together was the album version and she was able to lip sync the first couple of verses flawlessly if she couldn't hear anything at all? Not passing judgement, just wondering.

Billboard interview with Stella (70,715)
by Tiina from Finland
| |
|
|
Stella meeting Mariah was organic? How is it organic when you clearly use all of your connections to get to her? To me she sounded desperate to get hold of her. And I bet there was a lot of ass kissing involved to get into the position of the manager because that's the vibe I get from Mariah these days. You only tell her what she wants to hear and let her live in her bubble. I love her, even after the disappointing meet and greet last year, I will always worship her as an artist, but it's true, she lives in a reality of her own and to me Stella is enabling her and now possibly even pumping her up with "you're the biggest star, you're the best, you did them a favor, do not apologize, you should have thrown the mic in someone's face". I don't think that, say, about 10 years ago Mariah would have ever even for a second considered someone like Stella who has no real experience or understanding of managing someone at her level to suddenly be qualified for the job. Especially someone so, for a lack of a better word, ratchet, as they say. I hate that Stella has made Mariah a reality star. Even now Mariah still insists that reality tv is not for her. But it makes no difference that you try to call it a "docu-series" when it's clearly a reality show and a very badly scripted, boring one, for that matter. She's done an episode or two of "on the road with" type of tv episodes a while back and those where really fun and cute but Mariah's World is just awkward and fake. The only thing I like is when I see her with her kids. Same thing with these other endeavors, like I don't care about a makeup line or any of that fluff. Mariah once said that she refused to cash in on stuff like perfumes and just be the artist, the singer, songwriter, producer. I long for her to go back to that because I still care about the music. Mariah will always be my favorite female artist as far as voice and songwriting goes, she is my teacher. Her last album was very good. Her evolution in the studio has been such a wonderful journey. It's a gift to all of us other musicians in training and the world in general. But obviously music is not a priority anymore and that's sad. She likes to say it as Marissa said but it's just words. I like the fact that Mariah is branching out into films and directing and producing but why do I get the feeling Stella pushed Mariah to do these things because her real motivation was to partner with Mariah in a production company? From the get go I thought this woman just wanted a piece of Mariah's fame. Even before I learned she was her manager, I was like "Who is she? Why is this woman following her around and why is she in every picture with her? Who are these people?" You could tell they loved the attention and spotlight. Ugh.

Our girl to hit us with some crazy, over the top, new music that silences everyone and puts the focus back on the voice and music. I really hope that this can turn around and she can keep all eyes on her but in a positive way. I do feel bad for her. Clearly there were some technical issues with her performance and I do not blame her one bit for how she handled it. She's human like the rest of us and it's so much easier to say what someone could have or should have done. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a return to form. She is the comeback kid and I still love her with every fiber of my being. Happy New Year everyone. P.S. MiMi, you're becoming one of my favorite posters on here.

Yeah, I noticed it too. I guess people streamed the video 2,029,019 on New Year's day. Perhaps, they thought it was the video to the NYE (trainwreck) performance and clicked on it.

On a smaller stage and to a smaller crowd she might have been able to get away with just using her own ears, but in conditions like these you cannot hear yourself at all over the crowd and the music from the speakers, so her only indication on whether she's singing the right things is the delayed audio she gets when she hears the audience speakers. She basically was singing with deaf ears. I'd liken it to being at a noisy club where you can't even hear your own voice and end up having to yell to communicate with your friends. I've been on much smaller stages and if my monitors weren't working it was a nightmare. Even the hosts were having a hard time hearing each other, it was a mess.

100% agree with this. I even tweeted Big Jim about just Mariah, his piano and a tribute to George with "One More Try" humbly dressed and maybe at the end a choir. Literally nothing they can accuse her of lipping to. She needs this raw and now. The vocals would probably even be better than her recorded version since they sounded so chipmonk like in the album. The good thing about Grammy tributes or other ones for that matter is she doesn't even have to be on stage long. It could be her, piano, a few lines and not even the full version of the song since it's a tribute and it will get the public the point. And as the op has said, George there in the background. Stella, please get this done.

by T from USA

If he hadn't done such a bad job managing her in 2014 she would've never sought out Stella lol. Joke. But seriously people have been subtly, and not so subtly telling Mariah to straighten up for years now. Remember in 2015 when JD said Mariah needs to start taking her career more seriously and putting in the work that a legend needs to put in. Randy Jackson also tried to get her to focus and of course we all remember some of Walter A's concerns. I think this New Years thing was going to happen at some point, it's tragic that it was during one of her most biggest watched audience moments in the last ten years. This is one she needed to nail and it was the closest thing she would get to a "superbowl moment". It's only going to get worse from here on out I think. Tommy M was trying to shield her from all of this during the 1990's.

But at minimum, Crustella needs to pull out as her manager regarding the music. She doesn't know crap about the music business and she is way too unprofessional. She needs to pull out of Mariah's life full time and stick to doing the work at a safe professional distance. They are both way too co-dependent. Let her make movies, but she needs better control of her personal life and her music life. There are way too many blurred lines in her world right now and most of that is because of trying to be a camera and tabloid bound reality show artist, rather than a real artist.
