Last Christmas (107,866)
by Shezz from Pk
| |
|
|
It's interesting to see the [Spotify] daily charts (USA) have All I Want at #4 on [Christmas] day with Brenda Lee on 1. Mariah never made it to number1 on USA [Spotify] daily charts the whole of the last week (whenever I check). I suppose Spotify isn't the most popular streaming platform in the US since she's been consistently number 1 on the BB streaming charts. Globally she reigns supreme of course with the overall [Spotify] numbers.
The [Netflix] NFL bit was cute. A little too short I thought but I suppose they just wanted to use the song as more like opening credits to their [Christmas] presentation. Crazy how versatile and representative it is. Rockin' Around and Last Christmas would have never worked.
Hope everyone celebrating had a great [Christmas].

I had no idea they were giving "Last Christmas" a push with multiple releases this year. You'd think people might be getting tired of "AIWFCIY", but judging by its streaming numbers over the years, it's actually getting more popular every year.
"AIWFCIY" performance on Global Spotify on December 24th over the years: 2024: #1 - 24.86M 2023: #1 - 23.7M 2022: #1 - 21.27M 2021: #1 - 17.42M 2020: #1 - 17.22M 2019: #1 - 12.02M 2018: #1 - 10.81M 2017: #1 - 8.06M
Numbers don't lie.

I think that's partly driven by this year being LC's 40th anniversary with various vinyl releases, documentary, etc, Columbia pulling all the stops this year. Its the same with RACTC 65th anniversary promo last year resulting to it reaching number one. And then this year Brenda is not even competitive.

Ed Sheeran (107,864)

A Hozier and Mariah Carey collaboration in the vein of his song Take Me To Church could work as a lead single just to create buzz for a new album. The Spotify/video version could be with a full gospel choir. I believe MC will be thinking more out of the box in 2025. I say this because I believe new business deals will include stimpulations to work with more pop artists who could help bring in a return on the investment for releasing and promoting a new Mariah Carey album. The usual JD or Tricky R&B produced album will not cut it in 2025. MC has gone far too long releasing a new album to come back with a typical R&B album.

"Last Christmas" (24.55M) trailed "All I Want For Christmas Is You" (24.86M) by just over 1% in Spotify streams on Christmas Eve.
I think "Last Christmas" will eventually be a number one. Hopefully, it happens after Lil Nas X hands the torch back to Mariah, he's been holding it up high for quite a few years now.

Merry Christmas 3 (107,861)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
I think Mariah is more likely to make another Christmas album than any genre. At least that's what I get from her recent interviews. She sounds passionate about it and recently said that she's planning to record another classic Christmas song. Or maybe its just her feeling the season.
Her Christmas catalog is turning out to be a monster success, maybe she wants to capture this moment. And with the current state of pop music being disposable, the timing for another Christmas album would be perfect for her. But that also means many disappoint longtime lambs. But that's where we are right now.
Merry Christmas.

In my opinion, Ed's voice would blend better with Mariah's voice. I like Bruno, his pen game and delivery, but his songs usually have a moment where he goes all out vocally, and judging by the "Yes, And? Remix" vocal fiasco, I don't think Mariah's voice is in the kind of condition to match that. Ed, on the other hand, would complement her voice perfectly.

I feel like Ed Sheeran would complement Mariah's current voice more, they would blend a lot better with her current voice, and that would open a lot of potential collabs for her, pop with a blend of R&B but with 70s vibe is what I'm thinking.

Do we really want Mariah X Bruno though? I mean don't get me wrong, I think Bruno is very talented and they'd complement each other vocally, but Mariah literally publicly shouted out Bruno and asked for a collab and he never responded. Leaving our queen on seen.

Hi guys, I just want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and to thank you for being here and spreading the word about Mariah. First, I would like wish everyone a Merry Christmas today. I hope your day is filled with joy and love. Love is what we need more in this world. Second, I think Mariah and Anderson make a cute couple. Maybe Anderson is the type of man MC needs in her life. Any male who can write and sing a song like Leave The Door Open understands how to get a woman's attention. Plus, I wouldn't be suprised if Anderson is helping MC create a new sound for her next album. AP has won 5 Grammys. He is a well sought out songwriter and producer. Let's hope he is the one who can finally get MC and Bruno Mars in the studio in 2025.

MC could have one last great multi-platinum seller if she recorded three type of albums.
1. a duets soul and R&B cover album - early to late 70's and early 80's 2. a jazz album 3. a pop album produced by only 3 producers - Jack Antonoff, Jacob Collier, and Andrew Watt (top 20 producers of 2024).
I hope one day she can take home multi-Grammys like she should have done in 1996. It would be somerhing that would make her so happy.

Album sales (107,847)
by Edward from USA

Mariah doesn't sell albums like she used to, and that's just the natural progression of things. No artist stays at the top forever, it's a reality of the industry and of life. Just as our generation did, every generation gravitates toward new artists who speak to their current experiences and culture. Mariah music spoke to us. The same thing happened to legends like Aretha Franklin, Barbra, and even Whitney before Mariah. They were once dominant forces, but as time passed, new stars emerged, and the spotlight shifted.
Mariah's legacy is cemented though, she's one of the greatest artists of all time, with achievements that few will ever match. But today's music landscape is different. Streaming platforms have replaced physical album sales, and newer artists like Ariana Grande dominate the platforms for now. Even Ariana, as popular as she is today, likely won't hold the same position in a decade, because new artists will take center stage.
Let's not be delusional and think Mariah is the "It Girl", she isn't. It's not about fading relevance, it's just evolution. Sure, album sales aren't what they used to be, but Mariah's cultural impact and artistry always keep her in the mix. And when that time of year comes and she gives the signal, you know it's time for her to defrost and for the Christmas magic to happen.

Luis Miguel is an exceptional singer with a powerful voice. He could definitely keep up with her back. And even now, he sounds amazing and he never lips on his concerts. The fact is, when Luis Miguel heard the final mix, he didn't like how their voices blended together. With Rainbow being such a rushed album, Mariah didn't have time to go back into the studio with him. If they'd had more time, I'm sure they could've created something great.

Robert-Anthony, if it were just up to the Lambs, AIWFCIY probably wouldn't have hit the top or become as popular as it is now. Her core fanbase isn't big enough anymore to push the song to the top on its own. The song's really got a life of its own at this point. It's the regular listeners, many of whom might not even know her back catalogue, who are the driving force behind its success. In other words, it's the general public that's made AIWFCIY such a big hit.
Unlike Brenda, Mariah's name and achievements are still a big deal in the music scene today. Her concerts, public appearances, Christmas releases, social media presence, and loyal fans all give AIWFCIY a boost on the charts too.

I truly hate to interrupt the yearly Christmas news and celebration (I can't wait for the 19th and 20th weeks to arrive so she can social distance herself from the others on the chart), but I have to get this off my chest:
After having duets with Bublé, Bieber, 98°, Joe, West Life, Khalid, Jussie, and others - no one will ever convince me that she couldn't find a song to duet with Luis Miguel because he couldn't keep up with her. It's not possible. I've wanted that duet since way before they even knew each other.
But back to Christmas. Wishing you all a happy and safe holiday season.
